Good point.

Also Gourmet Wharehoise stocks the lodge pan I was looking at so probably just end up going that route anyways

Just came back from Japan not too long ago, craving shrimp burgers. Can't find anywhere in Canada, nevermind Vancouver, that sells the deep fried shrimp katsu burgers.

That's the brand I was talking about. Their pots are amazing.

My parents got a pair of them like 5 years ago in Japan and it's just mind-blowing the finesse on their quality. If Le Creuset was the Ferrari of cast irons. Vermicular would be the Pagani where they took it to a whole new level.

Nevertheless, I think dollar to dollar, Lodge is very hard to beat. If you can find old Lodge (earlier than the 90s from what I can tell) where they used virgin iron ore rather than mix of recycled/new, that's even better. I've seen them from time to time in estate sales. They tend to be finer (less or finer pores. If you are familiar with modern Lodge, you can tell them apart the moment you see it) and lighter/thinner. Modern Lodge needed the added bulk/thickness to achieve mass production rate.

If you're buying cast iron bling Gourmet Warehouse, Crate and Barrel et al sell Finex.

Personally the only modern cast iron worth spending money on is Field I don't know how people can justify $300+ on a Butterpat or Borough Furnace pan and say they perform better than Lodge with a straight face.

Any idea where to get those canned chu-hi drinks, like Strong Zero for example, anywhere in North America?

Asked around a few liquor stores in the WA and locally and the general consensus seems to either be oblivious to what they are, or say that Asian high alcohol content canned drinks are difficult to import either due to legal or cost-prohibitive issues.

Have unofficial reports that Uwajimaya in downtown Seattle may have chu-hi

Looking to buy horseradish root, looked at super store, and they didn't have any.

Bought the creamed version, and is no where near the kick the fresh version has.

Also willing to get wasabi powder or horseradish powder, if someone knows where to get it.

Thanks!

Fujiya for the powder. They used to carry the fresh root. Expensive as fuck. They even sold the plant. I tried, but it died. It really needs loving care and attention. You need to know what you are doing.

Anyway, Fujiya is your best bet.

I believe the root is grown somewhere in BC.

Also horseradish and wasabi are not even close to being the same. I've only had real (pure) wasabi a handful of times. What most people get at restaurants is the powdered mix. Mix as in a mix of mustards, horseradish, food colouring, etc.

Depending on the mood I'm in, I have my sashimi with Keen's Hot Mustard and more often than not, freshly grated ginger. Not the stringy kind. Yes, there are various types of ginger, too. Still pure wasabi grated from the root is second to none. Hard to get and expensive.

EDIT: I found the people who grow it in BC.

Saw horseradish root today at Granville island right across from Seafood City in the herbs area. It's literally across from the seafood display.

I used these guys before over by Ironwood in Richmond for some custom glass shelves on an antique display... they were super easy to deal with at the time:

Yea I asked them for a quote and they didn't respond lol

So far only Vancouver Glass on Hastings and Commercial responded. Regular glass $380 + tax and tempered glass $420 + tax for a 49 inch round piece

Look for round, glass tables on CL. Keep the glass, toss the base

As a follow up for that cast iron discussion, I ended up with the 12” Lodge Skillet from gourmet wharehouse, it’s been amazing! Best chicken ever

Speaking of chicken. I don’t like chicken all that much, but the best chicken I’ve ever had was at a buddy’s place where he made beer can chicken. And, I’m not fond of beer, either.

By no means an expert.. but white is more rare and more expensive (not sure about flavour profiles).

As for where to buy.. They have truffle oil at whole foods, granville island market, gourmet warehouse, etc. but someone else should probably chime in about the best quality one

Beer can chicken is about as tender and tasty as it gets for basic instructions

Any other stores that carry these Cello Parmesan whisps other than Costco?

They are delicious but very expensive.
