Not buying, but looking for service.

I bought a replacement remote Toyota key, and need to get that cut. Can most key cutting places deal with these remote keys, or do you need a specialized service?

Where is a good place to go for getting a new car key cut?

MG1 08-25-2011 05:04 PM

I thought dealerships can do it. I don't think any key place can do it. It's the programming that is the problem.

I have nothing but Honda's, but pretty sure Toyota's are the same.

EDIT: found this

How to Program a Toyota Transponder Chip Key | eHow.com

No, I don't need it programmed. I just bought a new housing for the remote, so the chip has already been moved over and works fine... so really just need the key itself cut.

You have to take the Key direct to toyota so they can program it. They do that so it's harder to copy as a safety feature.

Look at the post above your's.

I just need the key cut. No programming.

But I actually can program it myself even if that was necessary... a few years back, for some reason my remote stopped working, and I found a guide on how to reprogram it. It involved opening and closing the driver's side door and turning the key at certain times in the ignition or something like that.

I had my toyota key cut at a local key cutting store

the guy told me he's not sure if it'll work but he'll try

he also said he's not supposed to and you're really supposed to bring it to the dealership

in the end he cut it for me and it works but it didn't work too well on certain key holes like my trunk and glove box (maybe it needed breaking in? cuz it works fine now)

Broadway locksmiths.

Best in the business.

MG1 08-26-2011 12:38 PM

Just stay away from the locksmith at the corner of Willingdon and Dawson. They are terrible. Nice people, but just bad at what they do.
