I see lots of the Hilux Surf's running around but not any trucks. I'm considering purchasing one of these but am wondering if anyone has any reviews on them, or if they can even be brought in. Must be some reason why I don't see any on the road here? I want a tough reliable truck that's gonna last me 10 years and I've had my eye on the 05+ Tacoma for a while but have been putting off purchasing one in hopes that a better or cheaper alternative becomes available. I'd really like to build up a later model Hilux but I guess we're stuck with the 15 year import rule Mid-90's Hilux Surf's are selling in the $7000 range.
You can bring one in but there pretty expensive since there quite popular around the world Posted via RS Mobile
You can bring one in that's newer than 15 years old? If so please explain!
Even still... I haven't seen any 93-95ish pickups here nor have I seen any local importers that are selling them. Tyee has Surf's all the time, some really nice ones too.
Until it blows up or falls apart. I could get a 2-3 year old domestic out of the Southern US for .40 cents on the dollar but I haven't done that for a reason. I have friends with a Ford, GMC, and a Dodge and they've all had their own major problems.
too_slow - that is the major attraction. They're basically Diesel Tacoma's: less horsepower but more torque, better economy, etc.

no it still has to be 15 years old, but the pick-up is gonna be more expensive because of the high demand around the world thats why you usually see the surfs.
The JDM tax on early 90's Hilux trucks is fucking rediculous - especially considering you have to throw about $2500 into a new head (if you get the diesel), right out of the gate.
TegraDevil's, Surf would've been absolutely perfect if it was a 4dr Hilux (except for the Auto). He wanted about $7k for it and everything was done. Had it been a truck, it would've been over $11k, easy.
People just charge waaay too much for them. They have absolutely everything I'd need in a truck but the prices are just too high for 15-18 year old vehicles.
I'm guessing too much pressure from oil companies and the Big 3 are keeping Hilux diesels off the NA market.

The Hilux pickups are worth big money because the Africans and Aussies scoop em up but you can get them if they are 15 years old or older. The earlier second gen 89-92 hilux pickups had solid front axles and a N/A 2.9 diesel. No power but good torque. A good friend of mine has one I've driven it plenty and done plenty of work to it they are good trucks but if you want power then add the turbo from a 2.4 diesel to it. Do not buy a 2.4 td version the motors are junk.

89-91 Hilux's are still pricy in Japan, about 8-9 grand FOB..some how importers over here seem to get away with selling them for 15-20k and people do buy them..
15-20k are they nuts!? That's unreal. For such a common truck you'd think they'd be a lot cheaper even in their domestic markets. I guess the dream is dead For that kind of cash I might as well put it down on an 07+ Tundra TRD.
Yeah it needs to haul some bikes in the bed, maybe tow a small trailer, and get me up snowboarding without getting stuck. And I'd like it to do that without blowing a turbo (Ford), losing bearings or axles (Dodge), or having a gas tank the size of a peanut (Chevy/GMC) :laughing Seems like I either pay more upfront for a reliable truck or get a cheap domestic and play Russian roulette with maintenance costs.
The diesel Tundra concept is SICK but like has been mentioned the American manufacturers will never let it happen in North America
My friend pulls a 2000 pound trailer + two quads + camping gear + full family with his at HWY speeds with no probs but like I mentioned above he installed I believe a 2.4 turbo setup onto its original 2.8N/A diesel.
