how was a timing belt done wrong to cause a head gasket failure? did you check your oil and oil cap to see any chocolate milk mixture? a timing belt either is set on the wrong timing or it snaps. If it was on the wrong setting you would notice the way it runs, and if it snapped then most likely you would have a dead engine. Although $800 for a headgasket job seems more than reasonable i would recommend a second opinion from another mechanic. It could be say something like a crankshaft position sensor.
