Toyota recalls 1.53 million cars, about 28,700 of them in Canada

By Malcolm Foster, The Associated Press

TOKYO - Toyota is recalling 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan, for brake fluid and fuel pump problems, the latest in a string of quality lapses for the world's No. 1 automaker.

The Canadian division of the automaker said it will recall about 28,700 vehicles for repairs in Canada.

In the U.S., the call back will affect about 740,000 cars and 599,000 in Japan.

The models affected by the latest recall include the 2005 and 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 non-hybrid Highlander and Lexus RX330, and 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 vehicles, the company said in a statement.

Over the past year, Toyota has recalled more than 10 million cars and trucks worldwide for a variety of problems, from faulty gas pedals and floor mats that can trap accelerators, to braking problems in its Prius hybrid. In August, Toyota recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in the U.S. and Canada because their engines may stall.

The majority of vehicles this time around need to be fixed for a problem with the brake master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power, said spokesman Paul Nolasco in Tokyo.

Some models in Japan and elsewhere — but not in North America — have an electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine to stall, he said.

No accidents have been reported from the two defects, he said.

Nolasco said the recall decision was made under Toyota's new quality control regime instituted over the last several months in response to criticism that the company was slow in dealing with the slew of safety problems earlier this year.

Consumers with questions about the recall can call Toyota's customer service line at (888) 869-6828.

Wait so your saying that they should sort out ALL problems in the future and fix them BEFORE they happen??

Fuck guys come on IMO they are actually stepping up to the plate and fixing things that other manufacturers would say "Hmm that sucks not our problem though"

They are recalling cars that are 4 years old in some cases. I know Acura says "tough shit" when it comes to their known tranny problem after that long. In fact Honda didn't even do a recall in Canada they did a "Bulletin" meaning.. IF you heard about it they MIGHT fix it if in fact you never drove your car (under certain km) and you found out about it in time (before x amount of time passed)

So for you putting a negative spin on a company that is FIXING FOR FREE problems they might otherwise not.... give your head a shake. ALL cars have problems....

Berz out.

They don't take the car back from you.... facepalm.

You take it in and whatever the recall is they fix it for free and then give your car back.

Berz out.

Oh man.
They don't take the car back. All they do is replace the problem components, wash your car, and send you on your way. You might even get coffee and free wifi while you wait.

Imho, this is a good thing for Toyota to do, fix the problem the second you find out about them.

Not like my GM minivan POS, which has known issues with the ABS and ecu. Where are the recalls for Government Motors?

hey at least they are doing the right thing telling all customers about the problem and recalling them if repairs need to be done.
