I'd say its time to switch when the temps are consistently below 7 degrees

Which is why I have an old set of snow tires for mid-seasons. 5-6/32nds isn't going to do much in the snow but still work great in colder temps.

Didn't want to start a new thread, so I thought this would be appropriate. Mods: Please move if there's another better thread.
I'm planning to head down South to purchase a set of winter tires.
Going to cost around $900-1000 if I pick it up at Blaine / Point Robert.
I'm expected and prepared to pay the 12% tax.
What about the "duty"? What's the percentage?
Anyone purchased tires from the States lately? How many were you dinged at the border?

i usually swap them on late october/early november... or whenever i start to see frost on the road... my summer tires are actual summer tires, not all seasons, and don't stick at all when cold... can't even get down my alley...

Since I'm using extreme performance summer tires, I'll probably swap on my winter tires in the 2 weeks, depending on the temperature.

Me here. Bought 4 performance tires and various parts in July totaling $800ish USD and shipped to Pt. Roberts. I declared everything and was charged only the HST.
The shipment contained parts made outside of NAFTA.
Bought 2 replacement tires in September totaling $350USD and shipped to PT again. Declared everything and was waved off.
Did not pay attention to the origin of these tires, nor did it matter.
Act proper and declare what you have, you'd be fine.
Before you ask, TSB Shipping and $5/tire.

No longer have my Sentra but a diesel Beetle now and I just installed my winter tires today. Installed my studded tires on my F350 last week so I'm ready for the winter.

I'm going to fully declare everything (well kind hard not to when you have huge tires in your trunk + 2nd row)
And I'm calculating into the cost, that I'm expecting to pay the 12% HST.
But worries me is, I might possibility get taxed 943284234% "duties" as well.
Since the tires won't be made within North America for sure. Quote:

Glad to see people have only been charged HST at the most so far. | You are most welcome. I am a lurker. RS is too much for a softie like me.
In my many years and countless times of crossing, at all points of entry, Peach Arch, Pacific and PT. I have never been charged more than just the HST, nor was I ever asked if the parts were made inside NAFTA. Many times they did not even ask for any paperwork, they just took whatever value I verbally declared and charged me tax.
And I have not bought tires locally for a looooooong time.
So it comes down to this. In my experience at PT, if your single shipment is around 300 to 400 USD or less, the chance of you being waved off is very high. Having said that, maybe you get a buddy to help you carry two tires and each declare only two tires. Of cuz you don't wanna cross back to back.
Alternatively, head into Blaine or Bellingham and have tires mounted there and drive back with fresh rubber. IMHO the chance of you being waved off is higher, it simply shows you are honest and cooperating. Of course, don't try to lie, new tires look..........new.
Pro tip: Greet the officer, act nice, cooperate fully but DO NOT over-volunteer more information than what's being asked.
Hope it helps.

i know the weather forecasts are not accurate, but i use the 14 day forecasts to see trends in temperature. if you see it trending towards 0, might be around the right time.

I put mine on last night. It's been getting near 2 degrees on Burnaby Mountain, and the others already have snow.
The longer you wait, the colder it's going to be when you work on your car. |

I brought back winter tires last winter and they didn't charge me for it. They just asked if it was for me and if it was DOT certified. I told them they were for my car and they were bridgestone blizzaks and they let me go. Like others have said... be nice to them and maybe you won't get dinged.
