Luckily I was doing ~40, and was able to stop. I believe the Blizzaks helped.
Edit: I was out at 3 AM on the Highway, the car with snows held up very well. I even got to see an idiot in a Range Rover on 22s spinning all fours going up a little hill. I had to slow down to go around him, and he literally rolled down the window to stare at me, in a BMW "horrendous in snow" 740 driving past. Made my night.

how much tread depth determines the winter tires unusable?

Theres 3 wear bars on tires. 11/32" or 12/32" is a new tire.
Anything above 6/32" allows the tire to "bite" into the snow, giving you enough traction to get moving. 6/32" would be the "tallest" bar in your tread pattern.
At 4/32", they're acceptable for rain as the tread is still deep enough for rain to escape through the grooves of the tire. This should be the 2nd tallest bar.
Legally, you need to replace them when they hit 2/32" which at this point, is only sufficient for dry weather. They'll look really worn, and you shouldn't have to look at the wear bar to replace them.

For winter tires I would replace at 4/32" to maximize snow traction capability.

I managed to slide my car around on pretty much untouched snow on my way to work Saturday morning. It was a moment since it was fairly quiet, but showed me the lack of grip all-season tires can have.

Im looking for some winter tires to replace my stockies on my 2011 Civic coupe, its the stock 16inch rims. with 205/55/16. I found some at walmart for like $45 bucks a tire, and saw some at costco for $200 a tire. Any recommendations?

If there are no changes to the brake size from the previous gen (06-10), you should be able to fit 15's on there w/ 195/65/15's. Do you know if the entry level model runs 15" wheels? From my understanding, only the Si requires a bigger wheel.
edit - didn't realize they ran that model for 6 years. If you want to go cheaper, run the 15's.

+1 on altimax as well. Second season running them on the Mustang and I always feel like I'm in control or at least can easily recover from any slideways driving (intentional or not )

I don't think you should rely just on the bars.. since different brands / model of tires, the winter compounds are not applied evenly on all the plies. Some are only on the first 4/32 etc.. there are no strict rules and they don't tell you.. I would say 5 - 6 years is about time to change a set... assuming you put it on about 4-5 months of the year. Test drive before a snow fall, ~5C you can feel the weight transfer is not right, it is time to change.
In the end, winter tires are much cheaper than equivalent all seasons / high performance summer tires. It boggles my mind, people complain about the cost of tires for extreme weather conditions, yet more than happy to shell out 1-2k for summer tires. Quote:

Super slippery out there, went down a relatively side street (a block in from 40th and Victoria) and the roads were iced over, had no idea until my wheels started spinning with little throttle
