for 1998 - 2002 (some 2003) model forester
make sure the head gasket is done recently and properly (~$2000 job to do)
they are prone to leaks if not maintain properly

my friend picked up one of these in the middle of October as he needed a truck for winter with 4x4. Pretty comfortable ride but 17L/100km city is pretty heavy. paid $4000 for 00 with 220k.

get a 2002+ Pathfinder if that's within your price range, the 3.5L engine is so much better than the 3.3L
I would stick with the pre-faclifted 3.3V6 version for the reason that they've switched over to aluminum suspension components on MY1999+ and above. They wear out a lot faster, and aren't cheap to replace..

3rd Gen 4runner with an e-locker. I belive the 3rd gen's have the most ground clearance of the 4runners and the e-locker is win. Also came with the 3.4 which is a much better motor than the 3.0.

Jeep drivetrains like to go boom if you wheel them so i'm told.
