| need help deciding on a suv
im looking to get an older SUV.. something around 1996-1998...
should i got with jap like 4runner/pathfinder.. or go domestic with the explorer/jimmy/blazer type?
this will be a winter SUV, so 4x4 is a must..
anyone with good/bad experience with these particular years of suvs? anything to watch out for thats costly to repair

watch out for older pathfinders, super easy to steal as the keys and ignition get worn down, so much so that any key (or screwdriver) will open it and start it. that's my limited experience anyway...

what's your price range?
get a 2002+ Pathfinder if that's within your price range, the 3.5L engine is so much better than the 3.3L

I used to have a 4x4 Jimmy, the only thing I ever had to fix were the shocks that open that back window.

older 4runners are built like tanks. my friend had a 96 4banger and it had like 350,000 kms and was still running strong. he was telling me they are known to go up to 500,000 km. i believe him

+1 for 4runner. but I hear that some of the V6's are POS'es, and people switch to or try to find the 4-banger version.
Can anyone elaborate?

Thanx
I dont really want to spend a whole lot as its only for winter driving, mostly on the highway to chillwack... so getting a 2002+ would be outa my price range.
Since a lot of you guys recommend the 4runner, i will look into that... which years of the 4runners are good.. after 95?

Can anyone elaborate? | the 3.0L from 87-95 is a bit of a POS if you get an auto tranny. They had shitty headgaskets from the factory and were a factory recall.
the 3.4L V6 in the 96+ is the motor to get... lots of power and not too hard on gas.
The 2.4L is damn near bulletproof and good for around town and minor hauling and good on gas. I prefer the V6 for power.

96+ 4runner's still are quite pricey. I would say get a pathfinder the 3.3 from 95-99 is pretty good and doesn't have a jacked up price of a 4runner. Posted via RS Mobile |

I have a 92 pathfinder...no real issues other than regular maintenance and what comes with owning an older car. Just stay away from AT pathy and check for frame rot Posted via RS Mobile |

you could pick up a 92 jeep cherokee with a 4.0L I6 for like $500 and it will run for 500,000kms
or for more creature comforts find a 93-98 grand cherokee with a v8. 96-98 had an facelift
or if you like japanese you cant go wrong with a 4runner
i would stay away from jimmys/blazers

if your gonna get a jeep. stay away from the ones with a V8. the I6 is far more reliable. those engines were bullet proof. we had a 97 grand cherokee. ran for over 300,000km with only the water pump going bad. sumone hit it last year and it got written off or we would still have it.

If you want something cheap and dependable get a blazer or jimmy .
There solid trucks, the 4.3L V6 is one of the best motors GM ever made its a scaled down version of a 350ci or 5.7L. The autos (700R4) are solid too. Standards (NV3500?) are better yet.
I own a 95 s10 zr2, daily driver, off roader, toy hauler, and its seen allot of abuse. Nothing major has failed yet at 240k. Original motor, tranny, diff's, transfer case. Parts are common and dirt cheap for these trucks anyways.
