Fuck, I am leaving in about 12 hours to HK. Still haven't figured out which one to go with yet.

Maybe I will go with 3 for their data + local calls with my iphone4. And carry my super old phone with People's $0.25 per min for Canadian calls.

Any thoughts? I am only going there for 4 days, but need data for sure because I need to constantly check my email for work and school.

TRDood 04-22-2011 06:53 AM

Here's my experience.

Go up 1 level to the departure side and visit 3.

For micro-sim. It's $198 minimum.

$18 monthly admin fees.
$18 per day unlimited 3G data. Calculated every 24 hours at 23:59 cutoff. If no data used in a given day = no charge.
$0.1 per min local calls
$1.6 per min LD

What I am doing now:
Carry a GSM phoe with Peoples prepaid for $0.25 Canadian LD
Carry iPhone4 for local calls and 3G

btw, the $18 monthly fee includes 50mb of data for the month. Anything over that is $2 per mb and maxed at $18 per day.

If you are not streaming videos or tethering your other devices, these are very reasonable rates!

CP.AR 06-01-2011 01:43 PM

Bumpitty.

RS meet in HK anybody? I'll be there June 9th until July 3rd

I am confused as fuck looking at the data rates for HK
I asked my cousins... none of my family members use data QQWTF

I am looking for untl data and some calling... any ideas which prepaid i should go with?

edit: regular SIM would suffice

Ikkaku 06-01-2011 03:05 PM

I went with the $298 or whatever from 3HK as per previous post/suggestions.

If you talk and text, you will have to refill lol. The 298 lasted me for about 2 weeks (jumped from pccw to 3 in last 2 weeks) because in reality the stored value is just $270, which is not quite enough for max internet data ($338) and calling, with a few texts.

urban.boi 06-01-2011 05:43 PM

$198/month. unlimited data usage. 1000min. wifi unlimited. 15 sms. 50 video call. 200 heart to heart. 15 mms. on 3HK

CP.AR 06-01-2011 11:11 PM

^ this sounds about what I need.
it's just prepaid from any 3 store right

urban.boi 06-02-2011 03:22 AM

^ no it's not the prepaid ones. It's monthly, but they don't have a contract so you may cancel anytime you want.
There might be better offers now? I'm not to sure but 3 isn't that good imo. sometimes in the MK area you'll get temp no signal for couple blocks. I find that Smartone has one of the better networks same with PCCW.

Ikkaku 06-02-2011 10:23 AM

I'm not sure whether it's just 3 but I find the 3g service to be pretty unstable, perhaps its the mass amounts of people using data? I didn't have the problem urban.boi had with the no signal, but there were a few deadspots in terms of data.

btw, what's heart to heart? :lol

data was pretty decent in tin shui wai where I stayed :lol

TRDood 06-02-2011 11:37 AM

If any of you guys are heading back to HK and need a iPhone4 micro-sim, I have one lying around. I have no use for it, used for only 5 days during the Easter Break long weekend.

As of today, the card should have at least $100 HKD, I will sell it for $5 CAD.

It's better to benefit a RS member than have 3 eat my $100HKD away from it's $18HKD monthly charge.

PM me.

3 actually do have a lot of people using there service so 3G service is unstable in areas like Mongkok where a lot of people are running on the service so data and sometimes phone calls will have deadspot and or drop calls.

Tin Shui Wai isn't as congested as Mongkok so I'm guessing that why data is better off there?

Heart to Heart is the same as "networking calling" we have here. So calling between 3HK users.

one more question - my GF wants to buy a new cell in HK.
Other than Broadway and Fortress, what are some good, cheap, certified legit stores to get phones from? I got my N82 way back from a chain called "Wilson", but that was some time ago...are they still good?

The cheapest way to get legit phones in HK are the small dealers that sell non-local phones (they'll be from other markets, usually Singapore and China). They also resell brand new phones that were given as contract phones (not sure how they do this, but they do)

But you have to be careful, as they also sell fake crap, and some unscrupulous ones will try to scam you by including fake batteries, etc. There are a ton of these stores at Sin Tat mall in MK, if you can deal with the smoke and annoying sellers (they will often quote you the wrong price, depending on what they think you are looking for).

Also, most 'local malls' around large residential developments have these stores as well. I traded in my Desire and got a Desire HD from the one downstairs, and everything worked out fine. It ended up being one of those 'free' phones from CSL, so I had to remove all the crapware first (and I eventually just installed a custom ROM).

There are also the online shops like http://www.cheaphk.com that seem legit, but I have never tried them, so I can't recommend them personally. I use them as a price guide generally.

If you don't want to deal with all that, just pay MSRP at any store like Broadway, Fortress, Gome, Best, Citicall (which is now known by its mainland name of Suning in most places), etc. You can still bargain with these guys, but not as much, and it depends on the phone. At least get them to throw in a spare (3rd party) battery, desktop charger, and a screen protector.

Aside from the free battery, etc...how much bargaining room do these sales have?

Ikkaku 06-06-2011 08:03 AM

imo at the large electronic stores, there isn't much room for monetary bargaining. As SP suggested, ask them to give you free accesories or whatnot.

Oh, and Hang Seng/HSBC credit cards usually net discounts on purchases at places like Fortress. Not too sure about others, but I've seen quite a few places offering discounts when purchasing with credit cards from those banks.
