Symbian vs Android I've been looking to get a new phone lately and I would like some inputs on the Symbian and Android OS. Wondering if anyone with experience can provide some insight on the two OS to help me make my decision? |
better comparison would be Android vs MeeGo Symbian needs (and is getting) to be upgraded for modern times (in terms of looks) It's not quite there but its getting there; if you havent used Symbian before you'll probably not enjoy it and feel like you're using older tech although it can do what Android does and more but you won't feel like it can. There are solutions to that though you can install apps to make the User Interface look and run like anything you wish (even an Android phone) In terms of APPS anything running on Java can run on Symbian phones (there's no real consolidated website to find Symbian apps though the OVI store for Nokia is available but its slim pickings) you would have to look to websites offering SYmbian apps to get a fuller App experience. uhmm in terms of performance you'll have to know that Symbian is very CPU Efficient so when you're looking at phones don't think "oh this Symbian phone is only 680mhz and the Android is 1ghz; Symbian sucks" but this isn't true. Android demands a lot to run the OS so they require those high GHZ chips and unfortunately that means when new Android versions come out they'll likely cause your phone to be too laggy if you install them (as seen with Froyo) Having said that its really a great solid OS (its had years of work for it to be so) but north americans love their iphones and androids. Meego would be a great compare but a handset with Meego running on it won't be for another few months (you could compare Maemo but the only phone with that is the N900) it's kind of a scattered and probably incoherent reply to you atm i'll try and come back and freshen it up; i'm not thinking straight or have the time to atm ;) |
The only reason to use Symbian is if you have already been using it for years. Otherwise, a modern OS like Android or iOS or Windows 7 is the only way to go. Don't be silly and think Java apps are of any use :lol |
^Android apps are Java.. |
You can't compare the two... it's like comparing Mac OS (pre OSX) to something like Windows XP. Two different generations of OS's, two different TYPES of OS's THat being said though, there are still somethings that my N82 handles better compared to my Galaxy S IMO |
the E71/72 were crazy great |
Symbian used to be the go to OS out there now, IMO its android... followed by W7 > iOS > blackberries. |

^Yea I guess, I thought you meant just java apps in general. Now I realize you meant Java applets right? |
