| Shit is getting so real now...
like im growing up so fast... driving.. job.. all that shit now I gotta worry about a university, all in the past year..
I wanted to go to UBC or SFU and take business but apparently from what I'm hearing you need a fucking average of 85+ (sfu) and 90+ (ubc) plus probably a sh!t load of extra curriculars. thats fucking absurd imo.. I've always been a lazy slacker cruising by but now I really gotta pick things up.. I know I'm intelligent enough but I'm lacking drive and motivation. The school freaks who stay home all day studying, doing homework, etc in my class don't even have fucking 85+ averages in math and english... how the hell do you guys manage this shit.. I feel like id be at school 24/7. 8-3, then at home as well.
When applying do schools also look at other class averages even if theyre not listed as requirements (like sci, languages, electives even)?

are you in grade 12? if you cant get 80+ in high school while being slack.. dont even bother applying to university because odds are you're gonna get kicked out in a year.. then when you actually wanna do something with your life that year will haunt you..
depending on what your applying for there will be specific courses they will be looking at or a # of courses from a pool of courses
if you dont know what to do, figure that out first, (looks like you chose business), if u lack drive, do some volunteering or in your workplace find a role model. find someone so badass you would be stupid not to want to be like him.. once you find that person, you will have your drive. if you dont have the drive, said person wasnt badass enough.. keep looking
once you get into your said school, things will get tough. so dont give up.
if you are in high school. just learn how to study.
for math, just do every example/textbook question until you can do them blindfolded, may seem like alot but after the first time the following cycles should be a breeze..
english. learn how to plagiarize without them knowing. google is your friend. just read the internet stuff like 3 times.. then do your assignment WITHOUT using the internet stuff again. just use ideas if the same ideas show up in your textbook/notes
bio-read the teachers notes, then read the textbook to reenforce. textbook has too much info to read all
physics-good luck on this one cuz its all about understanding the concepts =_=. just do examples to learn concepts and how they work
chem-just do all examples and assigned questions, theres only so much they can ask..
and no you dont have to study ALL DAY, studying is about quality not quantity. just study in isolation or from distractions. the worst thing you can do is cram, if you do one section/concept a day its not alot at all. just keep up and get enough sleep before exams and you should do fine.

the 85% -90% is a mixture of 4 provincal courses. Not just math and eng.
With that, if you cant get 80% + in hs, then yeah university will be much harder to adapt.
While in hs, LEARN HOW TO STUDY. DONT MEMORIZE EVERYTHING.
Memorzing can get you pretty far on a chapter test, but memorzing a whole years for the stuff for a final exam? good luck.

by the way, if you are talking about the entrance in the year 2011, the expected cutoffs are around 95 for sfu and 90 for ubc, which is around the same as last year, sfu actually tends to be more competitive for business, especially these past few years, if you have a 93ish and plan on going to sfu, u better have alot of extra curricular, i know someone that had a 79% average that got in because they had alot of useful extra curriculars, such as valuable volunteer work working for well-known companies and was also part of the student council in hs...
im currently stuck in the same dilemna as you, im working my ass harder than i have ever been, because i know that studying well now is whats going to give me a better future, i know i can do it so i will do whatever it takes to reach my goals... i study a very large portion of my day because i am the kind of guy that needs to read over and over again to get stuff into my brain, i require lots of time to process information, maybe you`re that kind of guy and needs more time to learn stuff...
studying now for me becomes the many computer games ive played in the past, i used my attention on playing games, getting to the next level onto my studying, if i can spend so much time, hours and hours onto gaming, im sure i can do it on my studying, every ounce of knowledge u get from studying, u gain a level, instead of putting hours and hours into gaming, i put hours and hours into studying and gaining more levels in my knowledge... and in turn giving me higher levels in school, dominating others....studying-much like a video game
the most important thing is to focus and study, just know that if you want a good future, u have to start NOW, gd luck to u man, and gd luck to me

OP's attitude reminds me of this thread http://www.revscene.net/forums/dont-...o-t629865.html
there are people that really want something but can't get it cause university can be pretty challenging
if you have no drive and motivation in HIGH SCHOOL it sounds like you dont really want to go to business bad enough. Or you are just not mature enough.

u can still get into UBC arts with a 70ish average but late acceptance then transfer after first or second year
for SFU it`s easy as F to transfer into business
there are lots of options with a mid 70 average

Your perspectives on education are skewed. Don't even bother with post secondary school if you have no motivation to succeed. Hopefully the harsh responses in this thread will make you realize one thing: Grow up. |

Why do you need to get into UBC / SFU from year 1? There are many colleges you can go into, get a feel for post-secondary then transfer into UBC/SFU.
You will find that, if you study your passion( business ) , you will get high marks, cuz the concepts and theories are just that interesting.
My average in highschool was around C, and I was happy to get a C+. These days I'm rocking B+'s and A-'s while working and having a half decent social life.

It's all about doing what you love... | This exactly. If you like it, it will come naturally. I DESPISE anything artsy or related to literature, and my marks show that. Anything that was business or comp sci related, I always did well with VERY little effort.

there are lots of options with a mid 70 average | Not anymore. I think there was an article about this on Vancouver Sun a while ago. UBC said the cut off % for ART is around 84~85. The acceptance avg has been going up for the past few years.

"The faculty of arts, traditionally one of the easiest departments to get into, also now requires at least an A.
In 1990, students were admitted to UBC's arts program with an average of just 70 per cent. Ten years ago, they needed an 80-per-cent average. Now, with the odd exception, they must have an average of at least 86 per cent."
If you want to get into UBC with a 70ish avg, you probably have to try Faculty of Forestry.
One of my friends did it thhis way.
He got in with a 75 avg. After a year, he transferred into science.

Hmm, Donno why people are failing you I think you make some really good points...
I used to think back in HS that the entry avg requirements were way too competitive... It felt like only those who fricken study after school every single day would get in. So until gr. 11 I just messed around, never studied for a single test and I got by with barely passing grades... Then came grade 12 I straightened up, stopped doing drugs, and started going to the community library after school..
Man, it was so hard to understand the concepts because I had such bad fundamental knowledge of concepts that people would have already known from their gr. 8~12 stuff, I had to learn it all over again, on top of the grade 12 material being taught in school... Anyways I started from scratch, and worked really hard, and managed to change my average from 55% in gr 8~12 to a 90%+ in grade 12 courses like math, engl, phys, chem, bio, hell even ceramics!!
I can see how trying to juggle a job, gas, driving, etc and be studying at the same time is tough, in fact it might be downright impossible unless you're really good with time management... Thankfully, like a typical asian kid, my parents supported me trying to do well in school so in gr 12, they pretty much started giving me allowence and a car to drive.
My point is, don't listen to these people who say "OMGZ U DONT EVEN HAVE A 80% AVG, YOU FAIL IN LIFE!!"... Just give it time and raise your standards of the knowledge you want to attain and find a subject that interests you.. b/c once you DO get into a univ, if you aren't interested in the stuff you study, you're gonna either drop out or WANT to drop out and end up limiting your success..!

I'll keep this real short:
You're always going to run into people that will tell you can't do this, can't do that. End of the day, it is only yourself that will determine your outcome. Life's too short to worry about other people.
I too had to retake math 11 and 12.. And now I'm learning French. Never too late.

I gotta say the whole highschool entrance requirements are pretty shitty but it's the only way they can weed people out.
I barely made it into SFU arts out of high school... had something like an 80% average or so. Transferred into Business after a year with a 3.8 GPA then graduated with a 3.7. TBH, I put in way less work into my university courses than high school. Most of the time, I don't even attend lectures and just read the book myself. I know tons of geeks from my highschool who had A's in every course doing far worse than me (probably cause they can't suck up to teachers anymore).
No shame taking the long route if you have to... and like someone said, if you really enjoy doing something, you can get high marks without having to study every single day.

Shit gets "realer" every year!!

Worked semi hard in high school (if I had slacked I would have gotten less then 80). Got 86%. Went into UBC engineering. Kicked out after a year. Now I'm in my second year of college at Langara. Still can't get back into UBC. The GPA from year one will haunt... forever...
In relation to Jacked's post (OP), I'm assuming you want to get into commerce at UBC. Well here's the thing, and mind you this was 2.5 years ago. In high school, most of my friends wanted to get into commerce, one of them had high 90's, I believe 97% average or so, few extra curricular but the volunteer work that she did wasn't "impressive". She got rejected. My other friend got 85% average + esl. However, his extra curricular activities, volunteer work, work experience was very impressive... and yes he got in and now he's in third year, and slacking threw it.... My other buddy also got in, his case was a bit different since he's intentional student, so I'm assuming it's a bit easier for them (school wants money)... since he doesn't have to many extra curricular activities nor does he have work experience, only thing he had was a 85% and full IB.

Sauder's supplemental application is there for a reason: they do look at it, and take it into account during admissions. It's reflective of whether you have a passion for things outside schoolwork, have service ethic, or have achieved things outside of school that may have hindered your ability to get top grades (e.g., if you were on a sports team requiring significant time investment).
Stop complaining that the admissions averages are too high/they require too many extracurriculars. Obviously, if they're set at that point, a good portion of students are able to achieve it (otherwise what... nobody would be admitted?). They look at holistic averages because even if it isn't a prerequisite, it gives them an idea of (a) your capacity to learn, and (b) your work ethic.
In any case, what's done is done and there's no point whining about not being able to get in because of what you did or didn't do during HS. You could still apply--you never know--but move on and explore options that are available to you (Capilano/BCIT/Kwantlen?).
