| Canadian Boarder Duty/Tax on used goods
I'm planning on purchasing a set of used wheels from someone in bellingham. Do I have to pay tax or duty when bringing it over? I was told if it's made in USA then I'll have to pay 6.5% duty.
Thanks..

You'll probably pay tax. Have some way to prove how much you paid the guy, even if it's just email conversations.

I just bought a set of used tires. I had to pay tax on them. I had my e-mail conversation with the seller as proof of selling price.

There is no difference whether it's new or used merchandise in terms of customs.
If the item is made in the US, it should only be subject to tax, not duties, due to NAFTA.

sorry to bring this back up and stealing thread, I'm going down to Blaine tomorrow to pick up some stuff. I need to pay tax cause the merchandise is well over 600 dollars. do I just go through the gate much like everyone else? and they will tax me then? or do i have to go to a specific area and report?
This is my frsit time having to declare something at the us boarder, not to sure the process...
Thanks.

Thanks. | you go through like everyone else.
border guard will ask if you are bringing anything over, then you declare the goods... then they'll ask how much you paid. And after that they'll send you inside to go pay and you'll be on your way.

Thanks. | a word of advice when you go through the border, the more non-chalant you are the better.
so here are a few things i'd think about when coming back
1. wear sunglasses, the more relaxed you look the less sketchy you look.
2. have your music on maybe drum on your steering wheel if the song gives you the opportunity
3. don't open the window until he looks at you sternly or knocks on it with a flashlight.
4. when you do open the window, make sure your music and sunglasses stay on until asked to turn it off or remove your glasses.
5. hand him your passport with it between your index and middle finger, sort of like how you'd hold a cigarette, it gives off a relaxed atmosphere.
6. and when he asks if you're bringing anything over tell him the amount, and be sure of it, no point pussy footing around.
this has worked for me, i had a sub in the back too and the car was rattling incessantly, i've brought over car parts, hockey gear, drugs, children you name it, just be cool
good luck

unless he wants OP to get searched... I wouldn't claim they are made in USA unless you can actually prove it. Although they will most likely not question you about the origin of goods, it's best to just stick to the whole truth. The last thing you want to do is to break the minute trust that the officer has with you. Once all trusts are gone, you are going to get searched (if you are lying about one thing, what else are you lying about?).
