Can't really blame Translink if maybe the city could get their shit together and plow/salt the roads this morning

I don't think Translink has ever completely canceled their services before...

My parents live in East van and lost power this morning. Took me 2 hours to drive from Sourth Burnaby to East van, all the roads are shit. Didn't see one plow on the road, and there's tons of ice everywhere.

i don't understand how pretty much the entire major roadways around the LM were left unplowed/unsalted this morning

Sure, the forecast calls for rain but really? There isn't some kinda plan in place when they saw snow was still falling at night?

I don't know how all that stuff work in terms of coordination but the fact was that all the roads were shit today. Are we really this shitty when it comes to pro-activeness or did someone just drop the ball?

My commute was so weird. 33rd and Fraser area was crazy, so much ice and slush on 33rd, cars were all crawling at 20km/hr. Even with my Nokians, it was hard to keep straight because of all the wet slush that hadn't been plowed away, and then underneath the slush it was all compacted ice.

Once I got onto Knight it was a bit better. Then once I passed 49th it was pretty clear and smooth sailing. Richmond has almost no snow. I'm looking out the window and the streets are completely clear and I can see green grass patches already.

Not looking forward to the commute back into Vancouver this evening if they haven't plowed.

Woke up this morning to clear roads in South van and even clearer roads in Richmond. Had no idea what my coworkers meant when they said "man the roads are so bad" .

There were a bunch of idiots driving 20km/h on the left lane just clogging up traffic. If you are driving 20km/h get the fuck off the road and stay home. You are unfit. Saw one idiot who took up the entire traffic light cycle to get from one side of the intersection to the other and 18 wheelers were passing him on the right.

All seasons has no chance on ice like the pic. Tire would just spin endlessly. Probably go backward on a hill. You say they go 20km/h but their gauge probably goes crazy and reads 100km/h from the tires spinning.

I would guess, the same reason why they don't just put chains on buses. Because it'll tear up asphalt real good.

The stress induced by white-knuckling icy roads isn't worth it. Winter tires are worth every penny. I know they're expensive, but even if you're cheap and buy a set of used ones with 60% tread, it'll still be way better than all-seasons.

Certainly the snow clearing effort for whatever reasons today was appalling; however, just like how the city crews and us here on RS tell people who are ill prepared to stay off the fucking roads, if Translink had busses stuck all night long on 41st, and many other hills and routes throughout the city, there was a clear indication they were not ready, and would have been better off just cancelling or ramping down many of their services to where they could efficiently manage the issues.

At some point you have to come to the realization, that just sending more busses out into the mess that was this morning is just gonna create more problem than good.

EDIT: For the record blue bus in west van does this in events such as today, they have a phone service as well as advisories on their websites where they simply cut routes like the British properties or dundarave if the roads get too shitty in areas like that.

It's a crappy call to have to make, because your inconveniencing a lot of people, but you have to understand that providing the shitty kind of service I saw from translink this morning, is completely unacceptable. Also factor in people's safety, a bus gets stuck with passengers on board, then they have to debark to get on another bus in the middle of an icy street, or whatever. Or a bus sliding out on a hill like the one I saw trying to come down the hill on Canada way at imperial, the thing was like a runaway train.

I mean I saw like a dozen busses all mangled or stuck all over the road. Like fuck, you'd think they of all people would have their shit together.

They would have been better off just saying; "fuck it, we can't provide service today", rather than the dog shit gong show they supplied transit users with.

Spoiler!
was thinking the exact same. on main, 6 blocks of the right lane were occupied by stalled busses. on oak (or was it granville) somebody counted 23 stalled busses in a row. that leaves all other traffic only one lane, and especially in this weather when you definitely need more than a single lane incase shit (literally) goes sideways, it's a bit of a recipe for disaster. smh at translink seriously. pull your fleet of busses and divert your attention elsewhere, like running extra trains and ensuring tracks are clear, instead of blindly sending drivers out on articulated busses with all season tires that can't even make it up a 5 degree grade

Buses are in a different weight class than passenger cars.. there are much higher downward force on the tire.. so winter tires might not help as much as a passenger car.

Also think about the cost / effort factor.. changing those tires and so many of them on one bus takes quite a bit of time and take the bus off the road.
I think it is impractical to change tires like a F1 team based on weather.

Gong show should be over in most places, went southward for a Pt Roberts run, Richmond, Twassassen have hardly any traces of snow anywhere. Sun is out ... all should be back to our wet winter.

Edit - guess not, flooding everywhere, probably because of clogged drains with mounds of snow covering them.

There's fucking pooling water everywhere right now. The parking lot at Market Crossing outside of Mark's is like a lake. Sorry no pictures right now, maybe later

Was just out on Kingsway around Victoria and the Westbound side is still a rink but now it's a rutted out rink - makes going more than 20kph a nightmare. The Eastbound side is mostly cleared now. Saw the 25 bus get stuck trying to get up the hill right at King Ed/Kingsway.

Shit is melting fast though but probably going to be a bit icy tonight.

don't get me wrong, i completely agree that it's unrealistic that every bus be fitted with winter tires (10plus tires) for a snowfall that may or may not come. all i'm saying is if they know their busses are not going to adequately perform in this type of weather, cut service down. maybe not entirely, but disperse your resources on better methods for people. people spent hours waiting for busses that never came, because their busses were stuck in a 10+ bus stall that they're likely still stuck in
