Got one HD bucket with my folding shovel from the Haro location this morning.. no fuss at all.. You want maximum benefit from it.. store it in your hose so your heating system will suck out the moisture, once it gets dry then put a lid on it. Remember if the salt is a wet mess, it won't help you as much.
Amazing how unprepared even for free salt people are.. garbage bags, no shovel, no work gloves.. some seems to expect the fireman to shovel for them!!!
Honestly with donation costs a lot more than buying from stores. haha
Oh BTW the staff at Rona Coquitlam said there might be salt coming on Friday.

It is not how much salt but when do you put down salt.
Situation depends on the snow type (so always check the weather report before you salt).. if it is dry powdery stuff, I suggest do it after you have cleared.. one of my neighbors was smart to use a leave blower to blow away powdered snow. Remember melted snow will be heavier. This trick won't work when the weather is warming.
Wet snow you want to do it before it snows, so the snow melts right away. And afterwards.
Gravity works both ways, so remember always push down hill and the more snow you have left out there, the weight of the snow on top will melt the snow below forming ice. The trick is the shovel before melting starts, so I like to shovel at night, besides there is something zen about it, and also I love waking up the neighbors!
Oh also get 2 types of shovel, the one that throws and one that push.
How much salt you put down depends on how often you go out to check. In the morning I try to chip away snow melt stuff and black ice, lay down salt, breakfast, then clear away ice on my way out.. Then at night I just clear the ice, salt and go back inside. Since the weather calls for clear, you don't really need to salt bare patches, just ice melts. Quote:

I noticed when I was shovelling, my bumpy ass concrete was collecting a small layer of snow where the shovel wasn't making contact with the lowest point of the concrete. I figured once it melts and refreezes, it'll become slick so I just gave it a quick sweep with the broom to clear the snow away after shoveling.

Left is for pushing, right is for shoveling.

Honestly I am tired of this "Free but donation would be nice" line of cost recovery / fundraising. I think it is a very recent phenomenon. A lot of non profits and churches do that now, I wonder how much in the end do it contribute meaningfully to fundraising.
1. It is confusing.
2. It encourages bad behavior.
3. It is gutless and passive aggressive.
Can't they just say it is $xxx / bag but if you show us income slip, you can have it for free?
I lay the blame on millennials and the current CoV administration.

You would be amazed how quick a few inches of snow get blown away!! and I don't mean the left over little bits. My neighbour actually cleared the driveway in the first pass just using the leadfblower.. it was a backpack type thing. Of course some skill is required.. you have to aim strategically so it would blow back and 2 it is far enough so it won't melt.
The 3 lane 100m driveway was cleared under 15 minutes. Quote:

Some do it stealth styles but some have no fucking shame especially the older ones.

There was the Alaskan ice melt stuff earlier today around 445pm at HD by Gilmore Station. Got there at a good time and waited around for about 20 minutes for them to unload the pallet etc. People showed some civility in lining up but once the lady cut open the bulk packaging everyone's inner primate revealed themselves. Not quite as savage as the American Black Friday videos but for something that isn't really a life or death situation it was surprising to see people's manners go out the window.
