Seriously... buses seem to never be prepared.
Is it because it cost too much time/money to fully commit and swap in snow tires for intermittent snow conditions?

Haha.. they can't make it up that bunny hill. It's awesome how they just clog up the road waiting for the city trucks to plow and salt ... no cars can get through... I wonder how long did it take the salt truck to come.. all the drivers are just sitting there... What a fail Vancouver.. haha

Why don’t TransLink buses have snow tires?
TransLink buses use all-season tires recommended by Michelin for the climate in Metro Vancouver. These tires are all season, but they’re also ideal for rain. TransLink doesn't have snow tires for a number of reasons:
Snow tires are prone to hydroplaning in the rain
Snow tires are only ideal for powdery snow conditions, not ideal for icy roads
Very costly as we would need to keep inventory for the entire fleet for just a few days out of the year. Very time consuming to change all the tires, and snow tires need to be replaced more frequently because the rubber is softer
What would it cost to outfit the entire fleet with snow tires?
TransLink has not done a recent analysis of the costs of conversion of the fleet, however it found that replacing the tires on 1,500 buses twice a year would be significant in terms of the cost of tires and also the cost of storage and the labor required to do the switching over.
Why not equip buses in hilly, snow-prone areas with snow tires?
TransLink buses rotate on various routes throughout the region through the way they schedule, and it would be impractical to restrict its buses to certain routes only.
What TransLink does
In preparation for the winter, CMBC removes all tires with less than 11/32 tread and switches them out for tires with more tread. The tires with less tread are stored and saved for use in the summer.
CMBC Engineers have identified a Michelin Bus Tire as the best tire for the Metro Vancouver climate as it is rated for both mud and snow. Vancouver snow is typically very wet and will often plug up the tread on winter tires resulting in reduced traction. | According to this, https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/2...n-winter-2018/, they have some kind of kevlar sock now. |

| False. Quote:

| False. (Although I say that under the assumption that we're speaking of a modern-day (1990+) "winter" tire. The kind of tire given the three-peak mountain snowflake designation on passenger cars and trucks.) Quote:

| True, scheduling a full fleet tire swap twice a year would be an increase in labour. The initial cost of buying a full second set of tires for each bus would slowly be recovered in the need to not replace the 'summer' tires as often. Not sure how many years one expects to get out of a commercial winter tire, so they may not last as long as the equivalent commercial "all season" tire. Quote:

| Misleading statement. Winter tires often look "plugged up", but this doesn't account for the way sipes allow the tire tread to change as the tire rotates, which opens up more surface area, and where the bulk of the traction comes from. Not to mention centrifugal force naturally clears the tire tread of snow and water. That's why snow builds up behind the tire on your car, and why the MVA requires fenders and mudflaps.
...mind you, I wouldn't expect the majority of transit users to know, or care, about any of these false statements.

honestly i dont blame Coast Mountain, if Montreal and Toronto can't get their transit fleet ready for snow, we're doing alright

No sympathy for retards crashing in this weather. This is nothing compared to the east coast.
They are either..
-speeding believing they are invincible
-tailgating cause other people are adjusting to the weather conditions
-running bald tires like dumbasses
-running summer set ups
-or just plain reckless and have zero regards for other people's safety and at which point I believe they deserve to crash

You guys mean like this pic? Upper Level Corridor, North Van
What?! How??? Geesh.
I live on a *slight* incline, I'm talking maybe a 2% grade. The number of pickup trucks that have come partway up the hill, and had to turn around, is sad. Across from my house is an alley with a short grade, maybe 3%. Some guy was just gunning his engine trying to make it up. Eventually he decided to turn around, will probably head downhill towards the inlet and across town. These slopes are nowhere NEAR the steepest hills in Port Alberni. In fact, you can't go anywhere from my neighbourhood (if you want to return) without encountering much steeper hills. Guess they will be walking home?
Hey bud, if you can't drive you truck past my house...maybe you should park 'er for the evening and wait for a plow. My 2wd 3500 dually is TERRIBLE in the snow, even with it's winter tires, but at least I know how to drive it.

Got a taste of just how bad stock tires are, had to drive my sister’s ‘16 Civic up Heritage Mountain, could barely nudge the accelerator before TC kicked in.
Saw an accident on W4th, couple of cars crawling up the hill, another one stuck at Hastings/Boundary, Barnet was a crawl, several cars stuck on the hill in front of my place. Thank god it was a weekend

The last time it snowed this bad was a couple years ago also in Feb. It started during the day and by the time 6 o clock rolled around I had to get home in my rwd silverado on some useless e rated all seasons, so bad. I had to put another car back on the road.
