It's the combination of high winds and cold temperatures.
Better safe than sorry, I guess.
Speaking of LA and So Cal, https://www.cbsnews.com/news/calabas...er-2019-02-21/
Freeway shut down both ways? I guess nobody has ever sold snow tires in that area, lol.

What a frickin joke ... Alex Fraser closed earlier in the day. Port Mann reduced lanes ... both because of falling ice again.

I don’t seem to recall the Alex Fraser having those problems years ago and I crossed that bridge 5 days a week for nearly 11 years.. not until the new Port Mann was this an issue IIRC. Seems odd unless I was just oblivious back then.
Admittedly I didn’t watch the news much in my early 20’s but I can’t help but think I would’ve heard this was an issue back then over that kind of time period..

^ glad I’m not alone. Cant help but think perhaps climate change might be involved here. I really don’t think this was an issue for the Alex Fraser back in the day.

The other WTF issue is the inability of buses to get to SFU whenever there is a bit of snow. C'mon Translink, find a solution and get that fixed. |

They tried snow socks (something that goes over the wheels of buses for traction) ... obviously it didn't work. It's amateur hour at Translink. TransLink testing shows tire socks not as durable as anticipated
How about equipping a small fleet of buses (4-6) with snow tires that when you know snow is coming, they do the SFU route so people don't get stuck up there.
Then last year (remember?) ... one or two of the lines got snow on the rails and had to be shut down. Didn't people have to get out and walk to next station? At Canada line, they had to use buses to get passengers from Bridgeport to Marine.

At Canada line, they had to use buses to get passengers from Bridgeport to Marine. | According to Calgary and Halifax transit, snow tires also don't work, and those places get snow much more frequently. https://livewirecalgary.com/2018/10/...it-snow-tires/
I have a roommate from Ontario that also told me buses there don't use winters because the buses are always jam packed to full, so the weight makes the traction good anyway since traction is a function of normal force(which equals to weight on flat ground, less on inclines) and the frictional index.
To add, generally on West Coast, attendance to work/school will be cancelled in this kind of weather versus, say, Fort McMurray where I work now. Even with more snow on the ground, I still need to show up to work, company shuttles still run, as well as city buses. Makes the extra cost a bit less justifiable IMO.
You can argue that work/buses gets cancelled because buses get cancelled, but IMO the limitation comes more from road clearing capacity on West Coast. In Fort McMurray, roads get cleared somewhat quickly and I sometimes even see the graders and loaders that clear the road when I wait for my company shuttle(before 7AM). If the road is packed with snow/slush, you will still get stuck unless you jack up the buses to have higher ground clearance.

^ this is it, if you and I can reasonably rule out some options that don't work in other places and come up with plausible ones that might just in a post or two ... what are the 6 figure directors of Translink doing? Having meetings and writing up policies?
Great idea, have a couple of snowplows designated for SFU route.
Like the snow sock idea ?! Was that the winner of a grade 7 science fair or something? How much did Translink spend on that?

if you have a pickup you could sit at the bottom of SFU and charge a fee to ferry people up the hill
