So flew home yesterday, YVR is a complete joke.
Flew from Europe to Toronto, Toronto had like 6” of snow or so but the entire airport was bare, you could see they were actively clearing snow and puting down de-icer or whatever all over the runways. Almost all exterior surfaces were bare.
Flash forward to 8pm at YVR, landing on a runway covered in snow seemed sketch af and the plane def felt like it was sliding all over when the reverse thrusters engaged. Had to wait an additional 45 minutes before getting a gate (which, with stories today of planes sitting 4/5/8 hours without getting a gate I can’t complain too much)
Then took another hour and a half to get out bags because they said Westjet emoloyees all called in sick or couldn’t make it in due to the snow (at the time there was like what, 3” in the ground with mostly clear roads?)
Taxi line was 300 people deep, Ubers cancelled twice on us because it seemed like the road into the airport was so jammed it would take 35 minutes to get to that cell phone lot to the arrivals. So we then had to wait 45 minutes for a “delayed” skytrain at the airport station again due to “conditions” sky trained to Cambie, walked 4 blocks in ankle deep snow with our
Luggage to get an Evo and then drove home lol..
In terms of driving those Evo Prius seemed perfectly fine. Drove on some back streets and Cambie/12th/nanaimo didn’t slip once, no issue whatsoever in packed snow

Almost like a city that gets 30cm of snow once every 15 years is less prepared for it than one that does multiple times a year.

You think it’s acceptable to have an international airport brought to its knees over 6” of snow?
A 14 hour flight from Sydney to YVR spent another 5 hours on the tarmac cause no gate
There was another story about one plane sitting overnight for 8 hours before getting a gate
That’s not normal.

Do you think it wouldn’t happen in Texas? Or Seattle? or LAX?
Literally every year airports are forced to close due to weather. They are going to be most prepared for the most common weather issues they deal with, and the least prepared for the ones they least often deal with.

we are the pacific gateway to canada, and 2nd largest airport in one of the biggest northern countries + constantly bragging about being at or near the top of best airport lists (which i find weird)
should there be delays and some cancellations in the last 2 weeks of the year, sure..but not of epic proportions

climate change is here to stay, this sort of weather event will now be the norm and the ports/airports/municipalities better get used to it.

How many millions of dollars do major Canadian cities budget each year for snow removal?
Montreal $187
Toronto $109
Ottawa $78
Edmonton $57
Calgary $52
Winnipeg $35
Halifax $25
All of Metro Vancouver $10
Vancouver $4 Numbers are approximate, based on most recently available budget document. It is not uncommon for municipalities to overspend their snow removal budgets in any given year due to more extreme weather events. |

Couple things, it snows here. It does actually fairly often
Until late into the evening last night, midnight on, there was not very much snow at all. Completely manageable, or at least you’d think it would be.
YVR isn’t Abbotsford or Kelowna. You’ve got dozens of 10-15 hour long range, wide body flights en-route every day. You can’t just be paralyzed over 6” of snow..
I’m not angry or anything, I dealt with it willingly although I really didn’t feel like it but I wasn’t gonna just sit there and wait for somthing to happen like a lot of people seemed to be doing. Just seems insane how poorly prepared a MAJOR international airport that knows snow is a very real possibility can be

Can't really plan for outlier events, I mean you could but it'd be crazy to budget for it
Seeing tons of clips of ppl stuck at yvr, the sky train stations, bus stops, high ways... I'm just wondering if these people had to go out, or did they just assume everything would be fine? |

Snow isn’t really an outlier event though. Also having YVR prepared for snow isn’t the same as having the CoV prepared.
The 30 year average for snowfall in December is 7” https://www.currentresults.com/Weath...n-averages.php

It's not acceptable for a major international airport in YVR to not be prepared for heavy snowfall.
I am pretty sure that they have the technology to get accurate weather forecasts at the airport. Doppler radar. Heck, even weathernetwork.com would suffice.
A buddy of mine was super lucky to avoid the shit show at YVR today. He and his fiance took a flight out of YVR on Monday morning to Japan with a short layover at Nincheon airport in South Korea.
No flight delay for him and his girl whatsoever.

Accurate forecasts for next week don’t create equipment and staff needed to manage the situation.

Instead we need to collectively lobby the federal government to issue punitive fines for airlines that hold people on the tarmac for over an hour. The airlines in turn will pressure the Airport authorities to clean up their act.
All in all, YVR is not really a "MAJOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT". More like a major Canadian Airport. We don't even crack the top 50, and probably only barely the top 100 pre-covid (2019) with 24 million passengers. Point of comparison Sea-Tac had 46 million passengers and Toronto 47 million. Sad fact is most US airline hubs like Denver, Atlanta, Chicago blow every other Canadian airport outta the water in both scale and passenger movements.
Two cities with similar populations (2.6 and 2.8 million) their airports couldn't be any more different:
