Have had only 1 gathering at a friend's house for brunch and I am already "peopled out". Unsure why. Maybe it's because the last few Xmas have been spent in some form of isolation/restriction etc. I just don't enjoy get togethers as much as I used to.

Now I know why the Costco green valve caps are green. Who cares about nitrogen filled tyres. You can't lose these things. Green stands out in the snow and asphalt. I just picked up a set at the local Costco Tire shop (free). Black and grey just don't cut it. Sick of dropping the caps and not being able to find them, lol.

I hosted the family Christmas dinner then had friends over on Boxing Day. Two long shifts back to back. So much cooking and cleanup.
Hardly did a thing yesterday and still had a tough time getting out of bed this morning for work.
As much as I’d like to be peopled out my teens and their friends prefer hanging out at my place so I just made three batches of wings amongst other things to keep them fed and am now on my way to drop them off at the rink for a public skate.
Can’t wait for January 5th when school resumes

Considering the cost of a bridge…. Couldn’t they heat the effected pieces? Whether electrically, or plumbing fluid like hot water floors?? Geothermal? A few degrees would do it.

But no ... they are going to use that high tech dropping collars down the pole
So ... we can look forward to all 3 bridges shutting down maybe once a year! Government contracts and engineers ??!!

I still cant get over the fact that were replacing a 4 lane bridge with another 4 lane bridge..... like do we really need bike lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides?

Like how do you expect people on foot or on bikes to cross the river? A bridge is not just for cars and why should pedestrians and bikes get any less priority than cars?
New West said hell no to 6 lanes because the roads on their side can't support the traffic and even at the same number of lanes the bridge should see a bit more volume since it's not going to be as dangerous.
The design of the bridge does allow for expansion to 6 lanes if needed down the road and the bike lanes and sidewalks would be hung off the side of the of the bridge instead. I doubt it happens in the next 30 years - we'll see congestion pricing show up before that and traffic forecasts have never come true over the years.

Im not saying they shouldnt get some type of priority but u dont prioritize 30% of the bridge for the less than 1% of the people that use it. Ive worked right beside that bridge, or used that bridge both ways everyday for the past 20+ years and i rarely see anyone ride or walk across that bridge. I think the main reason why i dont see bikers going across that bridge is cause the hill going up Scott Rd and King George are absolutely brutal to ride up. Ive tried in the past. Thats why i think just the one side(south side) would be the only side required for bike lane and pedestrian walkway cause thats where Scott Rd & Columbia Stations are.
Yes im aware that New west are totally against to having more traffic going through there city, but u know whats worse than having alil more traffic going thru new west. Alll the traffic stopped and bottled necked trying to get into and out of New West. They basically already have 8 lanes coming in and out of new west already, might as well utilize it. But hey thats just me....

As far as commuter riding is concerned, electric bikes have been a major game changer. I am not a biker myself, but according to a hardcore cyclist coworker, a typical layperson will probably pump out ~200 - 350W of power on a bike, and electric hub motors in the 250 - 350W range is a fairly basic/low end setup nowadays.
What that means is -- hills are no longer really any major obstacles for cyclists that commute on their bikes. IMO, weather remains the far bigger obstacle for people to adopt/embrace cycling to work/school.
Of course, I think it is ludicrous that NW stands firm in refusing a wider bridge.

i use the patullo every day going east in the morning and west in the evening.
admittedly there is not a huge amount of bike traffic and even less foot traffic, but i could see the bike traffic increasing if it were safer. right now there is one single sidewalk for pedestrians and bikes that both directions share. when two bikes approach each other one must yield for the other or else passing on the unprotected sidewalk section of the bridge is extremely dangerous. if this were made safer then lots of people would cycle over this bridge imo. there is actually pretty decent biking infrastructure on both sides of the bridge already.
i cant help but to feel like they need a 6 lane bridge, because it gets way too congested going west in the morning and east in the evening. fortunately i go the opposite way, but the lineups that i see look stressful and depressing. going against the flow of traffic, it's completely problem free every day.
the new bridge would definitely help a little with congestion even as a 4 lane though, since semi trucks would no longer have to own the entire road with their hazard lights on so that nobody can unsafely pass them as they chug up the bridge at 30kph. still, during rush hour that isn't the main problem, its simply congested due to too many cars crossing over.

Of course, I think it is ludicrous that NW stands firm in refusing a wider bridge. | I tried it. I rode my Costco ebike from Richmond to downtown once and it’s do-able. I can then just charge the bike at work but there’s a few caveats.
- it’s slow. Bikes top out at 35kph and it’s quite annoyingly slow. Yes I can peddle to make it go faster than that but it requires quite a bit of effort since e-bikes are heavy as shit. Took about 45minutes on my bike one way.
- it’s kinda dangerous. Drivers aren’t looking out for bikes and I know the feeling of seeing one of these cycling retards on the street. You wanna just get around them which created a pretty dangerous situation for bikes. Yes you can stay on the bike lanes for the most part but it still sucks as intersections are quite dangerous.
- it’s not really pleasant. It’s cold, it’s windy, it’s rainy. I see why these guys only do it during fair weather. I also lack storage space so I added a side carrier to fit my work bag. Now it’s even heavier and less aerodynamic.
- other cyclists. Imagine a fleet of ratrollas going down the street at the same time and then sprinkle in a few Ferraris and gt3 RS. Most cyclists are slow as shit then you got these spandex wearing motherfuckers who goes like 45kph in their ultralight graphite bicycles yelling on your left all the time. God forbid you don’t hear them and then they give you shit for not letting them pass. You need a side mirror mod on bikes for sure if you’re commuting.
- lights. Can’t see shit at night. I could get some high powered led headlights but then ill just get my shit kicked in by some angry driver. Most of these paths aren’t that well lit and you can’t really see the potholes.
