Hi, got a stock S14 not too long ago, before I bought it I did get an inspection from a credible place, said everything was in fine working condition
I never really listened to the engine idle with the =hood popped= until today, noticed a rattling noise made when engine is turned on. The car drives well and everything, just don't know if this engine noise is normal or not for the car. I'm probably just being paranoid but I'll double check with RS just in case before I take it to a garage (if i do probably after winter cause im garaging the car when it snows)
Video of rattling noise in video, sound gets clear at around 9 seconds .. sorry for the crappy iphone quality video, you can hear the sound nice and clear though
OH Right.. engine is a fully stock KA24DE other than a drop in air filter.. not a rebuild or swap or anything, 130,000 km 1998 S14 if that helps
had this problem with my s13. im guessing either your tension guide is broken or could possibly be a water pump problem as well. its a common problem for ka24de

You don't replace the top timing chain guide, you unbolt it and set it on fire because it's useless. You should look into lucas chain lube, I heard it keeps the chain quiet.

its the timing chain guide, replace or remove your choice
Mine continues to rattle 24/7 even after driving for like an hour or when car is completely heated up QQ does yours only rattle at start up when its cold?
Hopefully it is indeed this "worn out guide problem" and not something serious
Some have said I need to replace the whole timing chain.. but my car is only at 130,000 kms and I do believe timing chains last a long ass time
Others have said just the remove the guide and it will be okay,
Does anyone know whether i should go with the whole timing chain procedure for my car at 130k kms or save a butt load of money and just remove the guides? Thanks
Timing chains last like 3 times longer than timing belts, so removing the guide is really all you need to do. If you are really paranoid then get your chain replaced.

How about you just take off the Chain Guides first instead of paying a shop to take away your money for a part that doesn't need replacing for A LONG TIME.
It's a Timing Chain. Not a belt. They last MINIMUM 250K
Take it from a 240 owner.
I've never seen anyone replace the timing chain.
They've only taken off thier Chain Guide.
Matt Powers.
KA-T.
No Chain Guides.
Hasn't replaced the Timing Chain. And that's his drift car on a rebuilt motor (block)
OP: Help something is wrong with my car, it sounds like ______.
A1: Replace ____________.
A2: Try ____________.
OP: Hmm, are you guys sure about this?
A3: Try what A1 said.
A4: Yep, sounds like A1 is a better choice.
OP: Ok thanks guys, im gonna take it into a shop and get buttraped.
2 weeks later, new thread:
OP: The shop is SUCH A F#()@*#( ripoff! NEVER GO THERE
A1: see OP's original thread here: (link to above post)
