Hi, !MiKrofT:
Thank you for your response. The problem I currently have is that when I try to enter the APN setting on my Desire HD, the whole screen just appears to be black. I tried to be patient and waited for more than 5 minutes, but still nothing showed up...

I just phoned Fido and got my data plan at 2pm today. I assume that I should have online access by now, correct?

When on the black screen, you just hit menu, and add apn.

I guess OP is wrong when he claimed the following?
i changed from iPhone 4 to this... faster internet and easy to transfer data.....

Now I feel bad about my phone...Should have bought the iPhone 4...Less headaches...

My phone can do normal calling and texting...Is there a way to change its frequency so I'll be able to use 3G in Canada?
In taiwan the internet will probably be faster than the iphone 4.

My frd just came back from TW and brought me back the HTC Desire HD. This is my first smartphone. I have never had any smartphone before and I never had any data plans before either.

So I looked through the Fido Retention Plan thread on RS, called Fido and set up a data plan. The CSR told me that I should be able to go online immediately. I kept on trying for two hours but with no success. I phoned them again to ensure the starting date of my new plan. Another CSR told me that sometimes it could take a few hours before the data plan becomes effective.

My questions:
1) Some people claim that one will only be able to use the 2G or EDGE service instead of 3G in Canada. Is this correct? Is 2G or EDGE noticeably slower?
2) Is the data plan just plug n' play or do I have to configure the settings on the phone?

Thank you for all the help. I'm pretty noob when it comes to technologies.

What you have is the European/Asia Pacific version of the DesireHD. It DOES NOT have the frequencies required to access the 3G network in North America.

There isn't anything wrong with the device at all. Did you input the APn settings correctly, shouldnt need both, but by having both sometimes forces it to connect

Thank you both for the excellent support!

I am finally able to get online, but...the connection is sloooow as hell...
I am trying to watch a short youtube video, and it takes FOREVER to buffer and it play intermittently...After playing for 5 secs, the screen freezes and a pop-up windows asks me to force close the youtube application...

I'll continue to play around with APN settings and to restart the phone. I hope this will solve the problem...(Damn, I just signed up for 6G dataplan today...this sucks...lol)

That won't solve the problem, 2g isn't fast enough for images, let alone video.

Sorry but there's nothing you can really do about the 2G speed. I suggest either you bear with it till the Desire HD comes on Telus and then switch and sell the phone or sell it now and get something else.
