No, only if ALL vehicle occupants have Nexus can you use the Nexus lane.

Mine is similar going down.. Coming back is different...

coming into canada (with 2 nexus holders in the car): buy anything? yes... $550.... $400 stuff, $150 groceries.......ok bye.

No more TDC's anymore, which gives us lots of grace to pass.

they still exist, you just have to fill it out and print it out yourself

Though you are right - they are no longer mandatory, a simple verbal notice is already good enough

Some officers expect you to have it completed. I learned this the hard way several weeks back, even with $150 worth of stuff. She still wrote me up a ticket to go pay taxes inside.

Edit: Thanks for bumping this thread. I need to renew my NEXUS.

I've always gotten away with verbal declarations. I usually only declare about $50 worth of groceries and never had to pay a cent. I think the typical breaking point to get taxed is about $100. On the same note, it depends how by-the-book the agent on the other side of the window is.

In Point Roberts they don't require you to write anything up...they just send you in to pay. Sometimes they let let you through if its around $100 or less. Coming back from the US I usually just go through the regular lanes (in Point roberts) as long as the line up isn't too long. They are more laxxed than the Nexus guys as far as declarations go I found.

i use nexus to go down, but regular back into canada.

i dont keep the forms on me.

didn't know verbal notice works. thought it all had to be written out.

i feel the regular lines are more relaxed. ive brought back $150+ without having to pay taxes

They changed that rule at the end of last summer. I tried to get some forms from them right after I got my NEXUS and thats when they told me I didn't need them.

I don't even bring my passport anymore, so I'd be showing my nexus pass at either line. That said, even if you showed your passport AND they didn't know...
There is no difference between nexus and non-nexus holder when it comes to being asked to pay tax on your purchases. It boils down to the person at the booth.

Yes they can. In fact, one guy asked me once why I was going through the regular lane instead of the Nexus. I told him that there was no wait so it wasn't necessary. He just said 'oh, ok' and that was that.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear that. I've been constantly over with higher limits and they've been nice to let me pass by. I guess it helps to have a kid in the car? Hmm.. i'll have forms ready in the future to save possible time paying inside.

I've been going to Blaine for the past three or four years. I normally find myself caught in the line up of Canadians heading home so sometimes, I'll take the NEXUS lane, make my verbal declaration and while there's a pile of cars behind me, the officer gives me grief for not having a form filled out.

It's happened twice but that's just really my fault.

+1 for this. it comes in handy not having to carry my passport anymore. I have a few client offices in the south surrey/white rock area so when I'm finished at the client office I just hop across for gas and come back.

I didn't know about the verbal declaration though, always avoided the nexus lane on the way back up..

I thought about that too, I've heard of many stories of people getting waved through even on NEXUS that it seems like 300 was petty. In total we paid less than 40 bucks in tax. I bought my blackberry from Walmart 2 years ago and they didn't tax me.

My brother's family goes all the time and comes back with everything they can fit in the car.

I don't have a kid, but I had a baby seat set up in the back anyways (I babysit my nephew here and there)

Just wondering from some of your responses. You don't need to carry your passport on you as long as you have the nexus? I've always been paranoid in not bringing my passport because I think they can reject you from crossing if they ask and you didn't have it?

I've travelled both by air and by car to and from the USA, in neither of the cases I carried a passport. So, don't worry . This is the beauty of Nexus, when you travel between Canada and the USA, there is no need for a passport, nor the line-ups.

By land I never carry my passport anymore. Keep my nexus in my wallet and even if I'm going with my gf she doesn't have a nexus, so through the regular line I hand over my nexus and her passport.

Via air I've always brought my passport with me, but mainly because in the past I've been flagged because of my first name and year I was born. With that cleared now I'll probably just carry my nexus.

I can't say that I've ever been asked for my passport when using NEXUS.

On a semi related note, has anyone used the EDL (Enhanced Drivers License) to cross the border? They used to have a FAST lane for people with the EDL but I haven't seen that lane in quite some time now. I'm assuming they would use the regular lane but then again, if they're machine readable like the NEXUS cards, I don't see why they couldn't technically use a NEXUS lane too. Has anyone who has one (or knows of someone who has one) care to comment on what lane they use?

I haven't used the EDL since I've had a nexus card before I even had a license. The main thing my family does is when going back in Canada, we usually go in the normal line because of the hassle of filling out the declaration card upon return. Kinda safer incase you get searched randomly and accidentally forget to declare an item.
