I sent in my application almost 3 years ago and they never followed up with me so I didn't either. Glad they're doing a better job about that!

Is there a news article for this?

I went for an interview yesterday and they mentioned something about a TDC to fill out

US border guard will ask you what the purpose of you getting the nexus card, then he or she will go on explaining how the nexus membership works and stuff.

Canadian border guard will ask the same question, along with if you have any criminal convictions, any arrests, or previous troubles travelling across the border or international.

I told them that I will go cross border shopping once every couple weeks.

Not sure how they will respond to "I hate waiting"

Mother eff.

I submitted my renewal back in April and my pass expires next month. Status still shows "Pending Review."

That's what I used. They seem to understand no one wants to wait 3 hours each way. Or the Officers that interviewed me were super nice?

And previous to the interview I entered the USA once in the 6 months prior.

My wife and I used the Nexus lane coming back into Canada after a few hours of shopping. Bought and declared $350 worth of home renovation type materials (a taxable supply here in Canada).

Said the guard, "are you bringing anything back?"

Me, "yes, $350 of goods."

Guard, "carry on."

Rule of thumb - submit your Nexus renewal at least 4 months prior to expiration.

adrn - with the exception of grocery, every purchase in Canada is taxable. Your story is sort of pointless.

Point of the story was that they let me through without having to pay any taxes. I was under the impression that they'd make me go and pay the tax since they're known to be more strict on payment of taxes for goods brought through the Nexus lane. The fact that they had let me through with $350 worth of goods was a surprise to me - and that was the point.

I've been denied entry once before, and been sent to secondary screening at YVR more times than I care to remember and they still gave me a NEXUS pass. (although to be honest, at the time I applied, I had a TN visa) The whole point of NEXUS is that it's a "trusted traveler" program where you've been pre-screened and deemed low risk and hence don't require as rigorous screening. I'm pretty sure they'll accept any reasonable reason for getting a NEXUS pass (like you go there shopping or you like to vacation in the US a lot).
Were you denied entry for a black mark on your record? Do they stay on your record forever?

I was reading the eligibility guidelines where it says. 'you may not qualify if one of the following applies:'
you have a recorded violation of customs, immigration or agriculture law;

So i'm assuming if you've ever mis/underdeclared and been caught, then you can't get a nexus card?

I was denied entry because they suspectedI was going over to work. While my purpose of travel was work related, it was simply for our company Christmas party. It was shortly after my L1B visa to work in the US had expired so I suspect that was why they thought I was going over for work. (I was working remotely from home in Vancouver at that time for the same company) In any case, the denial was based on a hunch rather than actual fact so that's probably why I was able to still get a NEXUS card.

I am fairly certain that any black mark/infraction is on your record forever. I was asked about the incident on my last Nexus renewal a few months ago and this incident happened about 6 years ago. I'm guessing that their allowing you to enter with a black mark on your record would depend on the severity of the reason for denial. If you've been caught bringing in contraband then obviously they won't let you in. If it's something more marginal (like you forgot to declare the groceries you bought on your last trip down to the US) then there's a bit more leeway. It's a trusted traveler program so if they don't trust you (or give them a reason not to), then they won't issue you a cards.

..with the new Canadian crossing in Blaine (back into Canada), it seems like there were like 8 lanes open, and to me it seems like Nexus was a little slower..hmm..

In anticipation of high traffic volumes, most lanes will be open at the crossing. Even if Nexus appears to be backed up, travellers are processed much quicker than the other lanes.

Nexus > normal lanes at anytime.

Last Friday, the Nexus lane was lined up from the duty free shop at around 10AM. It only took 15 mins to go through since the US border patrol just waved everyone through without asking questions.
