I think they can do it at the downtown location. I know this as I was there on Friday for my iris scan.

tiger_handheld 07-02-2012 08:18 PM

submitted my online application today.

noob questions:
1) whats next?
2) how long does each step roughly take?

bcrdukes 07-02-2012 08:30 PM

^

1. Wait for a letter of conditional approval. If approved, book your interview. (This is all done online I believe.)
2. It'll take about 6 to 8 weeks for your approval and then depending on where you do your interview, it could be as simple as a week or 2 months.

TurboTalon 07-02-2012 09:06 PM

Submitted my application 11 weeks ago, after exactly 8 weeks, i was able to book my interview, which I just had yesterday at yvr to give you an idea of wait times.

So for me itll have been about 13 weeks by the time I have my nexus card

yea, i tried booking at downtown but their earliest booking was 7 days later than yvr...
oh well, i don't need it anytime soon so i guess ill just wait.

tiger_handheld 07-03-2012 01:04 PM

what's the deal on the iris scan at downtown and/or airport?

rageguy 07-03-2012 02:03 PM

Once they have your iris on file, you can use the kiosks at YVR and almost every other Canada/US major airports.

However the kiosks is not all that good. One question asks "did you exceed your exemption". If you exceeded, you choose Yes. Then it'll immediately print a yellow paper that says you have to go to the cashier right away. In other words, if you exceeded your exemption, you will 100% pay every single time. Whereas if you speak with a CBSA, you may encounter a lenient person who will just let you go.

So you get to cross the airport customs faster, but no leniency.

Rate of NEXUS applications has nearly doubled - News1130

Its been mentioned already but for anyone trying to apply for a nexus card, it may take longer than you think now.

EDIT: my total time for receiving the card was 12 weeks

bcrdukes 07-11-2012 10:23 PM

Just got my card yesterday. :)

NLY 07-11-2012 11:01 PM

I sent in my online application about a week ago and it's still pending review.

I remember helping my parents with their application a year or two ago, and they got interviewed and received their cards within a month or two.

TurboTalon 07-23-2012 08:11 AM

Have any of you guys with nexus brought back a very expensive item, say a used turbo kit $2000-$4000?

Do they just make you pay the tax on it.?

SoulCrusher 07-23-2012 12:08 PM

^ are you a retard?

bcrdukes 07-23-2012 12:51 PM

racerman88 07-23-2012 01:26 PM

Thanks for the helpful response...moron.

I AM talking about declaring it. If that is what got your panties in a bunch. If not, then please enlighten me why it was a dumb question.

ANY item of value acquired outside of Canada is taxable
This includes used items, warranty replacement items, gifts etc...

SoulCrusher 07-23-2012 05:22 PM

All items purchased abroad must be declared regardless of value and regardless of if your a Nexus card holder or regular traffic.

You can try your luck and not declare it. If your caught, your conveyance and goods will be seized and become property of the crown.

TurboTalon 07-23-2012 05:53 PM

I declare everything, even before i received my nexus, hasn't even crossed my mind not to declare. I was simply asking/planning for 'what' I will have to pay, whether it is just taxes, or if there is in fact duty owed. And how it would be calculated.

bcrdukes 07-23-2012 06:48 PM

What you pay, be it duty and/or taxes, is solely up to the discretion of the officer. There is no empirical formula or mathematical algorithm to answer your question.

Going on a worst case scenario, you'll be paying HST (12%) plus duties of 8% (for a Category 4 "Auto parts" item). I'll let you do the math once you know the final cost of the item. How much you pay like the other said depends on how the CBP guy feels that particular day.

In the past nexus members had to fill out a form(traveler declaration card) where they listed the value of their items and their credit card information...it would then take a month or two for the nexus office to charge your credit card the tax and duties you owe...

you can now do a verbal declaration and it is up to the officer to either send you inside to pay taxes(immediately, no more waiting to get charged), or let you on your way

TurboTalon 07-24-2012 11:16 AM

Excellent, now those were the answers I was looking for, thank you.

I guess I'll be sending my wife down to pick it up, since they rarely make her pay, albeit she has never brought back any thing quite as expensive, and hope for the best.

SoulCrusher 07-26-2012 03:25 PM

^ fantastic idea! Bringing back 3rd party goods will lead to your card being seized at the discretion of the BSO. You should review your Nexus terms and conditions. (did you take offense when I called you a retard?)
