Purchasing a beater.

I've decided to get rid of my expensive car, quit my main job and go back to school. I'm not really car savvy so would a budget of around 3000 dollars be good for a decent, reliable car?

Help me revscene!

I know these threads come up alot, but forgive me revscene!

When you need beater?

I have a nice 1992 Nissan Maxima GXE (116,000 km, AT, never modded) that I am going to put up for sale in a month or two.

Just going through the phase of "oh fuck i'm so fucked for my future" stage, so once I get my shit together by next week I'll have a clearer sense of mind.

Just glad that 3k can get you a decent car.

3000 is plenty for a beater.

If you don't mind the early american car look, then go for it. It'll likely be less costly in the long run: insurance, repairs, et cetera.

i.e// early to mid buick lesabre (nice car with a good ol' 3.8l v6)

etc.

The main thing you need to be looking at is the engine/transmission. If you can find a car with a maintenance record, that's prob a good bet at a longer lasting car.

do you care if you need to put work into it? i bought a 93 civic si for $500, but it needed a new clutch and head gasket. i get all my labour for free since my brother's a tech hehe so score for me. also the interior was wrecked, so now it has no back seats or carpet. and the driver side window doesn't roll down. but for $500 plus $200 in parts for a gas sipping reliable beater? can't beat a civic. there are tons of cheap cars that with a little work will be super reliable.

and shit, with a budget of $3000 you can take a shell of a car and turn it into something pretty sweet

I'd preferably like something with 0 work required.

I'll just use this thread to post updates of my life.

Seeing a langara counciller next week. Getting my bumper fixed on my 08 tl next week, and I'm putting it on craigslist for lease takeover.

I applied for a few new jobs so no idea if I need nightschool right now, but at least I have a part time job that pays 20+ an hour.

I'm looking to get into nursing, but I'm on a waitlist and still short some courses, so I'm meeting with a counciller to find out what courses I need excactly.

I originally wanted to do mechanical engineering and aeronaughtics, but alas my current situation I have to go for a career thing.

Langara + nursing...might take a while to get in. Most people expect at least a year wait.

I expect it. I'm not worried about the wait, it's more about saving money while I go to school to do my upgrades. Essentially I don't want to have a money pit of a car (paying 1k a month with paymets/gas/insurance) while I should be saving money so I don't have to work so much while going to school.

i'll reiterate what others have recommended: a civic!

with $3000 you can easily buy an EF (88-91), EG (92-95), and even EK's(96-00) (coupe/hb/sedan all close price range) are a lot cheaper these days.

EF will range from about $500-$1500
EG will range from about $1500-$2500
EK will range from about $2800-$4500

in recent threads similar to this, people have recommended staying away from automatic transmissions in the 96-00 civic/97-01 1.6EL as they are problematic. not sure if this only applies to the sedans though.

i'd probably go with a EG Si since you probably won't be doing any mods to it or perhaps a 96-00 Si coupe (both have a 127hp vtec engine stock). parts for these cars plentiful and also cheap.

If you really don't give a crap what you are driving and ultimate reliability is your concern a 93-00 Corolla is a much better choice than a Civic actually.

Just look at what the driving instructors are using and my rationale should be clear to you.

a near stock 1988-1993 Nissan 240SX
just find one still rocking the old engine KA24DE truck engine.. those are known to go way over 300KKMs, find one btw 150KKM to 200KKM? for about 2000
cheap on gas (if you want it to) and cheap on insurance...
155hp/150ft.lb when new @ 2700LB dry weight, RWD...
honestly.. its plenty...
and you are still gettin 130hp/130tq for sure =.=

up to you man... Civics are great... but 240SX is.. i guess a lil bit more fun thrown in?

^4 cylinder accords have one of the most annoying auto trannies IMO not sure if its any better in the civic.

+1 for the corolla, Family has had 2 in the last 7 years. Grandpa put 230k km on his first and only ever replaced a starter outside of regular maintenance. You can get an 03 for under 5k locally or in the states within your budget and you'd have a much newer looking car inside/outside

if you get a civic, you might get tempted to mod it. lots of cheap parts are flying around....
