anyone mind helping me out with rooting and roms and such for my nexus s?
its been over a year since i've done that sort of thing on my hd2 so im a bit worried i'll screw this up =s
Ics hasn't been out for months. It was only officially released in December. I believe some users here have actually gotten the update ota. Mobilicity users I think?

IIRC, they stopped updates as there was a bug and will release when fixed.

The ICS launch event was Oct 19, if it wasn't going to be ready for release then, they should've delayed this. As of today its been 2.5 months since that launch event, and still no ICS for the Nexus S.
I am a big fan of Android, yet this is where Apple shines. When they hype something, they keep it under wraps until its ready for release. Its awful to keep customers waiting for something that keeps getting delayed.
Launch event does not mean immediate release though. Apple does this too. Product is not available immediately after the announcement. Mind you we're talking about a major OS jump. ie Android 2.3 - 4.0. iOS 3 - 4 wasn't smooth at all.
i'm still using the ota update for my nexus s and so far i have no problems with it. battery life still able to last just a bit over 24h. still not as smooth as gb but the layout looks nice. i'm already used to the google search bar now.
what roms/kernels/radios do you guys use? would love to have my battery last that long but think the best its doing is about 18ish hours. 1/4 of which is mostly standby
^lucky you, my phone was at 50% battery with 4 hours of use earlier today :/ maybe thats because i was using 3g constantly but that is still really shitty compared to my old iphone :/
does anyone else carry an extra battery around in case they run out of battery? lol
Are people comparing a launch event with a product release? When Google/Samsung announced Ice Cream Sandwich, it was simply an official announcement; nothing else.
For about 4-5 months, Apple had announced this iOS 5 software and simply stated "coming this Fall." It wasn't until October, almost 4 months later that Apple released iOS5.
Beginning of October they made it official, a few weeks later they released it...with bugs (but that's how all software works.) Apple really only carries one mobile product, the iPhone. They've made a total of 5 iPhone models all together, and iOS5 is compatible with the last 3 and for the last 2, it's available with limited features (ie: no Siri)
The point is, Google is releasing the software and there are so many more devices that need to be brought up to speed so to speak in order for ICS to become updated across the board. As I mentioned in the Galaxy SII thread, it will take a few months for older phones to receive the ICS update...it always work that way. This is a major revamp, not just some little update. The software you receive will be specially tailored for your device. That, takes time...

Weaksauce.
That's no excuse after an official announcement Google cannot have ICS running on their "pure" Google phone. As you said, Apple had a solid date when iOS5 would be out and working on Apple phones weeks after the official announcement. I can handle that HTC, Asus, ... might take awhile to recompile ICS for their devices, yet not for the "pure" Google phone.

haha its cuz i noticed on your fb that i thought about flashing different roms and such. hats why i'm hoping some nexus s users will shed some light for us. 4 hours of constant use and 50% left... thats... decent? as of right now, mine has been on battery use for 14hrs. but roughly 7 hrs was on standby. now sitting at 36% on 3g all the time with active sync.

Still, there is more than one "Pure Google Phone." Yours isn't the only one. Google powers the phone, it doesn't make it.
And let's be clear on what is happening. A ICS release was made for your phone. Many people downloaded it, many people loved it, some had problems with it. So instead of continuing to source out software that would hinder your device, they decided to stop people from receiving the update, fix the bugs and then send it out again as as they're done.
Unlike Apple with their iOS4 updates..Google is ensuring that each device gets a worth upgrade. The problems that people experienced are the same ones that people with iPhone 3G/3GS experienced when they updated to iOS4 last summer. Bad battery life, freezing, and intermittent cell phone reception.
To be honest, the solution is out there, but you prefer to receive it officially over the air, which is fine. I have ICS on my Nexus S since November and it's been running fine, NO problems whatsoever.

Check out crystal mall if you live in burnaby. If in Richmond I'm pretty sure daiso has them and you might as well go third floor to cube inc or whatever it's called. Hope that's better advice than those guys up there -__- Posted via RS Mobile
I honestly don't know how some of you guys are getting 18+ hours on your phone running minimal apps with no battery saving app.
I am with Wind, running ICS 4.0.3, background data on, 3G ON (all the time), my phone is running at 8hrs 35 min with 28% battery left, screen on is 1hr 57min. Battery life sucks!

this is what i have running ics 4.0.3 with background data on, wifi/3g on, text messaging, and 5mins of angry birds. will post again when i reach near 20% if i remember. phone is complete stock and no task killer or any other battery saving apps. i was also one of the few who got ics ota before they canceled the download.

and please post your screen on time under the "screen" menu. If you received the official stock OTA update then you shouldn't be running 4.0.3? correct me if i'm wrong.
