i was expecting it to be a tad more spectacular looking
Really? To me, this was far more spectacular than anyone should have expected for a TV show, especially when you consider how lacklustre the rest of the series's battles have been. So many huge battles were crippled.. Blackwater, Dragonstone, Siege of Winterfell, most notably Mereen which was as weak as it gets... This was by far WAY more spectacular than any other battle that has been on the show, and had tons of FX with giants, mammoths, and direwolves, sweet one on one combat, epic moments like the chain sweep, gruesome deaths, close up moments, etc, etc, etc
The more I think of it, the more I wonder if you were even paying attention, or are being sarcastic?
EDIT: John is supposed to be 14-15? It's crazy how young they're supposed to be and what they're actually doing in the books/show
I'm actually glad they increased the age of many of the characters, because certain scenes would be VERY creepy otherwise
On the other hand, specific age is pretty ambiguous in the book anyway. What's more important is whether you were born in the summer or winter, or once you are past "30" etc.

really? in my memory the battle of blackwater was a lot more exciting may have simply been the impression it left on me though
but i was also hoping for more magical/fantasy creatures and expected them to do a lot more than simply guide the mammoth to the gate and I was hoping to see that fight at the inner gate with the giant that got through
don't get me wrong though I still enjoyed it very much
