Rogers and Fido start new policy: Will unlock your device for $50

Quote:

Looks like unlocking cellphones is starting to become a trend. Recently TELUS announced they will unlock various devices for a fee starting in 2011… but today both Rogers and Fido have stepped up with a new “Handset Unlocking Policy”.

According to the internal doc it states that “Effective December 14, we’ll be changing our policy on device unlocking to allow customers the opportunity to unlock their devices for a $50 fee. This new policy applies to phones, smartphones, and rocket sticks depending on the manufacturer’s restrictions. Customers purchasing a new device or qualifying for a HUP are also eligible to have their previous phone unlocked.”

Of course there are some stipulations to having your device unlocked. If you’re on a contract you’re not going be the happiest person: Your account must be in good standing and you “Have paid the un-subsidized / no term cost for the device at least 30 days prior OR have finished their Commitment Period”.

Of course there are several other 3rd party options to unlock your device… Progress right?

how about spend the time and look into adjusting the cost of their rip off plan

Anybody and their grandma can get their phone unlocked.

I'd be happier if they would just offer us a clean android install with full user control.
You know, pretty much what Samsung would be handing them for them to tweak. Cause that, I'd actually pay for.

How crippled is a rogers android device compared to a vanilla one?
I got the rogers captivate and it's pretty smooth to me. No ugly rogers crap besides at boot up.

Wait.. I have to pay for the no term cost of the phone 30 days before unlocking and then pay 50 dollars to actually unlock the phone...?

can't you just go to crystal mall and unlock for 15$

or just walk into any cell phone place in GVRD, pay $20 and 15 minutes later you'll have the same result.

I wonder if they would unlock the iPhone.

terkan 12-14-2010 02:27 PM

the part about having to pay for the unsubsidized price of the phone part doesn't make sense. because you are still on a contract, so how come you have to pay the unsubsidized difference? so why am i on a contract if i were to buy an unlocked device if you don't subsidize it?

They're actually really good at leaving it bloatware free.
The biggest problem is that they don't support updates well at all.
I got the Magic when it first came out based on the assumption that it'd keep getting updated to newer versions of android as they were released. Needless to say, I got tired of waiting and went through 2 more phones before the Magic got updated to 2.1
Now euro handsets have gotten 2.2 on their Magic's but I doubt Rogers will follow up on that here.

I think its a good thing that they're offering this but the cost and conditions are bs to the max.

At least next time some jerk off asks me where they can unlock their phone I'll just tell them to go to Rogers/Fido lol

Anyone a good site to get unlock codes for US phones?

windchaser 12-15-2010 06:47 AM

Is it the same to all iPhones?

The memo says all devices unless manufacture restricted, no iphones

Iceman_2K 12-15-2010 06:26 PM

thats not necessarily true. Check Howard forums - people are unlocking their iphones from Fido by having Fido send the IMEI to the Apple white list.

iPhones are allowed to be unlocked...I'm having a bitch of a time with Fido at the moment, but all I need to do to fix this is to fax in my original invoice when I bought my 3GS

Psykopathik 12-17-2010 08:32 AM

don't they know when you bought your phone????

dai3yuen 12-17-2010 10:18 AM

I bought the 3GS for full price from the Apple store, so it has been never in Fido's system. That's the problem. The IMEI does not appear in their system so they won't unlock it.
