Probably the best raw footage I've ever seen: Ice Hornet - A Roof Over Switzerland. If anyone finds an HD version of this streaming or as a torrent please let me know. I'd love to have it in 1080p on my big screen with the volume at "severely piss off the neighbours".
God damn their jets are clean. I had a HD version that I d/l a while back, just trying to remember where I got it. I'll send you the link if I find it.
BTW, that video in the last post they were talking about watches. All fighter pilots that graduate 410 have the chance to buy a special edition Swiss "Canadian Hornet pilot" watch. I saw one in person and it looked sick - for a $5k watch. I guess those dudes can afford one with their 6 figure salary.
Holy F man, talk about fast-tracked. I'm getting ripped off as a DEO
Thanks Belka I'd appreciate it!
Ya, i'm going through it stupid fast. Handed in my application on January 4th. If I do good/pass this aircrew stuff then I was told I get put a waiting list and am chosen from there. My other friend was under the impression from his bookings person that basically if you make it to aircrew then you're in. We shall see!
I'm calling my recruiting center tomorrow. This honestly infuriates me a little because I've been ready to go on a days notice for many months now. Even if there's a line for course I want to do OJT @ Cold Lake so I've been wanting to go ASAP.
Thanks everyone for posting in this thread, and all the awesome information posted! I am sure that this is the only thread that doesn't disappoint on Revscene!!! Love it! So much win!

The pilots claimed that they stick their hands out of the canopy at Mach.2
Not a chance, it would rip their arms off. I doubt the ability to fly that fast without the canopy to begin with. I didn't think there was a fighter in service capable of Mach 2 since the F104, I had to look it up to confirm but the SU-35 does in fact do it

What about the F-15? Its mach 2.5+ isnt it?

I've heard Mach 2.5 and they say that on a lot of websites but I don't believe that at all out of that aircraft. And if it does do that it's at very high altitude like 40,000ft+ which a fighter will almost never go unless in transit. But honestly you'd have to ask a pilot who won't give you any BS, publicly released vs real-world stats aren't always the same.
The F104 could do over Mach 2, lightly armed, at sea level. Very different story
My son has access to one of these. I have even flown it with him as pilot. Has all the military switches, bomb & missile racks and even some "trophy stencils" from some "non-government flight activities" plus missions fron Nam.

Noob question - why does altitude have an impact on top speed? What's so special about "sea level"? I'm sure it has something to do with the atmosphere though...

Atmospheric pressure. The air is thinner meaning less resistance and easier to push through. At sea level the air is as dense as it can possibly be.
For the history buffs, the F104 is the jet that almost killed Chuck Yeager. He was pushing for a new altitude record and stalled it. From his biography:
"On December 10, 1963, while testing an NF-104A rocket-augmented aerospace trainer, he narrowly escaped death when his aircraft went out of control at 108,700 feet (nearly 21 miles up) and crashed. He parachuted to safety at 8,500 feet after vainly battling to gain control of the powerless, rapidly falling craft. In this incident he became the first pilot to make an emergency ejection in the full pressure suit needed for high altitude flights."
And here's one of ours that was based out of Baden-Soellingen, Germany during the 70's and 80's.
Must be hard to time a fly-by right after the anthem. It's not like you're a car stopped at a light, nor do you have a clearly defined path (like a road) of where to fly!

Snowbirds were about a minute late this year. In Calgary last year they were bang on the money. And last year one of the CF-18's was probably 70ft lower and pulled a full 7G to the right as he crossed the far end of the stadium, full burner, at dusk. It looked like the jet slid out of the stadium, the crowd went nuts.
I remember when I was watching the funeral procession for Smoky Smith, when the Regiment crested Burrard Street Bridge - the group of CF-18's did the fly-by with the missing man formation. Absolutely amazing.
Yeah the timing is tough, they're just given a time and hope everything is on schedule. Snowbirds were about a minute late this year. In Calgary last year they were bang on the money. must find vid of cf-18
