For commercial vehicles yes.....otherwise winter tires for passenger vehicles are ok

Don't take offense to my disagreeing with you, I just don't want someone to be misinformed. I posted that because, I was concerned people might misinterpret your post and think the can't use chains for more than a few kilometers. They can be used for as long as necessary, you just need to check them.

If the weather warrants chains you can use them indefinitely, but you need to drive slow and and check the chains frequently to make sure they haven't shifted, which isn't a big deal since you wouldn't be going fast in the conditions that warrant chains.

Yes, chains are extremely hard on tires and can be hard on the car, but an accident cause by lack of traction is infinitely worse. Cars are a depreciating investment anyway, if you drive in severe winter conditions you need to expect above average wear and tear. If you seriously concerned about damage use cables like the owners manual probably recommends.

Thank you Godwin, your post was extremely informative for inexperienced winter drivers. Your correct, you should check chains frequently the longest you should go without checking/tightening chains is a kilometer.

Also, make sure you test fit the chains a couple times, it takes practice and I guarantee it will be difficult your first time on the side of the road.

You can drive on chains for a good distance, but I would NOT recommend doing it on relatively clear roads.

+1 if magnifies every one of the potential problems exponentially.
