| Advice on getting out of Rogers contract
Alright folks,
I was out of my contract was looking at leaving the devil known as Rogers. Then the new iphone 3gs came out and I was stupid signed a 3 year deal.
I am now half way through my contract. I hardly use the iphone enough to warrant the $100+ bill every month. Plus I can no longer afford it.
I want to ditch rogers and get the cheapest phone/plan with Wind of Mobilicity.
I just want a cheap phone with unlimited local calling/text and voicemail.
If I cancel with rogers they will charge me up the wazoo cuz I'm still on contract right. I think its something like $400.
Anybody have advice that could help me or am I basically screwed here at paying a huge amount.

to my knowledge you are basically screwed, i want to get out of a contract myself and go wind for the $40 unlimited voice and data plan
best bet i think is to call in the cancel (make sure you are in right department at customer retentions because only they have the power to give you deals), be nice to them, and talk down the price of your contract by getting credit for like msging/voicemail bundles etc
cause $100 is a lot....
im paying 55 before access fee and tax for an iphone4 with rogers

There's no magic way to get out of your contract.
You either pay the early cancellation penalty, or you can reduce the cost of your plan down as much as you can and ride it out.
I would say to definitely call in and say you want to cancel... and at the very least get them to put you on a much cheaper plan and see what discounts they can offer as well.

I believe Early Cancellation Fee is $20/month remaining on contract to a max of $400. Have you looked into reducing the features on the plan to lower your monthly cost? I'd talk to their customer service to evaluate your options.

Early cancellation fee is $20/mo maxing at $400. data cancellation fee is $5/mo maxing at $100, I believe. He'd be stuck paying close to, if not $500 to cancel early.
Your best bet is to get through to retentions and see what they offer you. Be calm, be reasonable, stand your ground. Ask them if they can do better.
Also, before getting retentions, see if the area you're in (postal code) has any known service issues. This can help you get those early cancellation fees waived. Poor service in your home area is a valid reason to cancel early.

$500 to cancel done deal @ $100/month
MATH: $60*18months left with rogers = $1080
You still profit either way by canceling, but my advice is to call rogers retensions and tell them your situation. They will probably give you something competitive.

If you try changing your plan they'll probably end up adding another 3 years without telling you.

Thanks for the replys guys.
Ya I will have to call them. I might try to downgrade my plan but I think that with the iphone I HAVE to have data as well as voice. I remember the guy telling me that when I first got it. Hopefully that is just when you first sirn the contract.
I called them the other night and tried to see if they could suspend my service so I wasn't getting billed when my phone was disconnected due to not being able to pay my bill.
Its like okay, you disconnect me, but I still get charged on my phone even tho I cant use it and there is nothing I can do about it!!
If I cant downgrade to just voice then I will just cancel and pay it off when I can. I already owe them a few hundred as it is.

data cancellation is $100, so you could cancel data and just get a low level voice account.

I tried to switch over to wind today but while I was on the phone with the CSR at fido, he was telling me $20 each month left for my data contract(18).
Plus $20 a month for my voice contract(5).
$100(voice)+$360(data)= $460 he was telling me to cancel my contract..... complete BS!

If you subscribe to a data option, a Data Early Cancellation Fee (DECF) also applies if, for any reason, your data option is terminated prior to the end of your data option’s commitment term (Data Term). The DECF is the greater of (i) $100 or (ii) $10 per month remaining in the Data Term, to a maximum of $200 (plus applicable taxes), and applies in addition to the ECF for termination of your Fido Agreement. If you have subscribed to your data option before July 19, 2009 and you continue or renew on the same option on a 2- or 3-year term, the DECF will be the greater of (i) $25 or (ii) $5 per month remaining in the Data Term, to a maximum of $100 (plus applicable taxes), and applies in addition to the ECF for termination of your Fido Agreement.
| Seems like the CSR is BSing me. I'm going to call again tomorrow.

$190 isn't too bad. I was looking at $500 to cancel. 23 months left on voice and data.

I'm happy with the deal I managed to get through retentions, though. Got the $50 North America unlimited plan with voicemail and caller ID credited and $15 credit for $25 500mb data. I get essentially what I would through Wind or Mobilicity for ~$20 more, but I still get reception outside "home" zones and don't pay "away" fees.
That's a good thing, for me, since I snowboard/hike regularly outside of the Vancouver area, and head up to 100 Mile House a few times a year to visit family.
And, if I ever wanted to, for whatever reason, I could use the iphone.
I still have 23 months left on my contract, too, didn't have to re-sign.

It's amazing what you can get when you call in and talk to someone.
The key is to be NICE. Anyone that's worked customer service before knows what I mean. The rep on the other end of the phone doesn't really give a shit that you were too cheap to pay for a phone, so you signed a 3 year contract, and now you're stuck. There is zero point yelling at them, or being a dick. Save it, and punch a baby once you're off the phone if you're frustrated lol.
I've gotten deals on new phones, and I don't pay for voicemail/caller id on my plan. That's just for calling and asking. If you don't succeed on your first call, try again another day. You really have nothing to lose for trying.
