Emergency!!! Last minute USD withdraw?

Asking for my stupid friend

They are heading to LA for a shopping trip with a few frd tomorrow. My friend thought the banks would open after boxing day and as it turns out, they won't until wednesday.

He has a USD account with RBC but RBC's USD dispensing ATM doesn't have access to any USD-based account.

Now, what are his options except exchanging CDN into USD? (he doesn't want to do that as he has some USD saved up for this trip)

I have a BoA Visa card, (no, lending him the card is not an option) will I be able to withdraw USD without some crazy transaction fee in Canada's ATM that dispenses USD?

If someone can come up with some other options, they are greatly appreciated.

There will be transaction fee if you withdraw at a foreign ATM. (so yes for your question about your BoA).

^

How bad is it?

I couldn't find any reference on BoA website about withdrawing USD in foreign ATM, only withdrawing foreign currency in foreign ATM. And their told free # seems to be closed now.

If it's a fixed fee like 5 dollars, I can just ask him to pay me 5 bucks. But if it's too crazy, I'd just ask him to get USD out of his CDN account.

If he has a RBC USA Access account he can use ATMs without a fee

Quote:
access to every CIRRUS*, INTERLINK* or STAR* banking machine† in the country ...plus the 350 RBC Bank (USA) ATMs locations in the southeastern states.
if he was headed to the south eastern usa he could just walk into a RBC branch :/

and i think they have an office in California

edit: looks like its only a Wealth Management office and its in San Francisco

Whats more convenient? Having USD or driving around finding some partner branch to save a couple of bucks?

Go to an ATM (they'll tell you what the fees are before withdraw) or go to a Walgreens or WalMart, make a purchase, and get cash back on your purchase.

Most ATMs charge $2 or $3, some touristy places have independent ATMs that have 99c fees.

There is a currency exchange kiosk desk at Willowbrook mall in Langley, there may also be one at Guildford Town Center in Surrey as well...just throwing out another option.

I used debit when I went to Costco in Burlington. Their debit machines are even faster than ours. (WTF)

Many if not all RBC in and around White Rock have USD option because we're so close to the border.

All RBC ATMs in the lower mainland have the option to withdraw U.S. denominated currency now. The thing to remember here is that it actually converts and take the money out of your Canadian dollar account NOT your U.S. dollar account. So unless things have changed since I was last at my branch, this is what I was told.
