Wheel paint?

Need some halp. So I need to make a custom colour for a set of wheels I'm painting. Can I just go to Lordco and get them to match me up some paint and use spraycans? This route seems ghetto but relatively cheap. Another way is a friend of mine says he can paint them professionally for me if I bring him the paint as well. But it needs to be the paint that has to be baked on. Where would I get such paint? Thanks

paint being baked on? you mean powdercoat? I'm not sure locally, I've only seen the powder online.

Go to a body shop and get them to whip you up a custom color.

Cheap rattlecan paint will chip... I've been there, done that. All the prep in the world won't help if it's crap paint.

Either powdercoat (which would be baked on.. heh..), or get a professional wheel refinisher, like Mike at Western Wheelcraft to do it right for you. Someone on here recommended him to me, and I had him refinish my Enkei's before selling them. They looked brand spankin' new...

yeah.. if you bring in a picture or something, the specialists can get it pretty damn close, if not better to match your car.

Polyurethane based paint. Try to find those.
Problem is, right now Lordco is changing their paints because of Gov't regulations.

If you want powdercoating, rainbow powdercoat is cheap. Blast and coat for around $300. Only thing, he takes a while...

I know.. I was disappointed too.. I was gonna do it on my G35. But after seeing a Camaro at my work with DIY painted black rims, I'm really glad I didn't do it to mine. It looks suuuuuper cheap. And I'm a pretty cheap guy.

Calipers shouldn't be too bad though.

As long as they are prepped well. My calipers need a repaint, yet its been 6 years with only minimal chips.

The DIY kits are crap, friend of mine purchased one and the stuff he powdercoated turned out crap,it was a complete waste of money.

If you insist on doing it yourself, spend the money and get a professional powder gun.

You can DIY paint your rims and calipers, but you need to use rim paint or chassis paint. This paint comes in a rattle can and will stand up to the high temps from braking as well as resist chipping unlike the regular spray paint. This may not be an option for the OP as he is looking for a custom colour, but for the other guys looking to do silver/bronze/gunmetal/black, etc...the can should work fine if you prep properly. I did mine using Duplicolour rim paint.

^ I used that same Duplicolor rattle can crap... and it chipped to hell in a few months.

Then I did it right, the second time. Had the tires removed, sand blasted the rims to bare metal, then powdercoat. Then remount and balance the wheels. Never chipped, even once.

The next set of rims... painted by Mike at Western Wheelcraft. Real paint, with real clearcoat. Looked mint.
