Nexus One & Desire Z? Hey RS, I have both a Nexus One and & Desire Z, im only planning to keep one and letting the other one go, wanted to see from experience of RS and your opinion which would be a better keep -Thanks |
I would keep Z personally. I just got a Z and loving it so far. the 1.5GB internal storage space is just incridible. |
Desire Z has a new better SoC (system on Chip) newer processor and gpu. Also the mini keyboard is handy. also IMO Desire Z looks nicer. |
Between the 2, the DZ has the newer and better hardware. |
how would the SGS fair with the Desire Z, i like it but it has way to much plastic for a premium phone |

In terms of physical size and weight, SGS is thinner and lighter (because it's made of plastic, and lacks the physical keyboard) PROs of SGS: - The SGS has the better GPU - Bigger screen (however, the DZ has higher pixel density) - AMOLED sceen vs Super LCD (matter of preference) However, there are 2 main reasons why I would NOT get a SGS: - GPS tracking issue - RFS Filesystem is used, which causes slowness/sluggishness. - Samsung is notoriously slow at releasing updates With that said, the good people at XDA-Developers have fixes for all the above issues, but requires some "know-how". |
I'm somewhat familiar with the know-how like flashing custom roms and applying the lag fixes/rooting etc.. I believe you can flash the SGS to 2.3 stock gingerbread direct port from the Nexus S? but yah seems like the gps tracking issue is horrible and the slowless should be fixed when flashed to stock 2.3? Might be a good idea to hold out for a next gen tegra 2? |
if you're going to switch again play with an N8 :P i'd keep the Z over what you're considering now though |
I bought the z a month ago and exchanged 2 times. All of them had "issues" with the hinge. For some it's an issue for others it's not. People have different expectations. But other than that, everything about the phone is just better than the nexus one. HOWEVER, it is much easier to resell the nexus one than the desire z imo. Especially with the new devices coming out this year (tegra 2:eek5r:), personally I would use the nexus one for now and resell it later for a better device. Just my 2 cents :) |
Hinge issue? What's the issue? I found it a bit lose, but ok overall. Posted via RS Mobile |

People expect a spring mounted hinge that snaps open/close, and the DZ hinge doesn't do that. They call it "loose hinge" because it's too easy to slide out the keyboard. Here's an example from youtube: IMO, it's just people being super picky, because nobody would be able to duplicate that through normal use. (who picks up a phone like that?) |
yeah thats probably a major flaw with the Z "design decision" when it comes to something like that just seems like total bs that's like when Jobs blamed users over problems with the ip4 |
So its not like that on every z? Mine is just like the one in the video.... arrhhhh, I thought its just a design problem? Posted via RS Mobile |
It's not even a problem. It's the way the phone was designed. When they designed the hinge, they didn't account for the people that will be picking up their phone just by holding half the phone (like in the video). But I'm saying, who actually picks up their phone like that? I always hold both halves of the phone (screen and keyboard halves). The only people that pick up their phones like that are the people that are purposely trying to exploit a flaw that in my eyes doesn't even exist. |

Where did u exchange the Phone? I got my phone from BB in Richmond... I had the feeling about the phone not being sealed and no screen portector when I got it.... Was it suppose to be sealed? Did I just bought a phone that someone returned? |
i bought it at the wireless etc. kiosk in costco. They don't seem to care how many times your return it :/. My first one was loose as hell, 2nd one was good but battery cover was screwed up, 3rd was loose as well. You get a tight one if you're lucky. It should come sealed, no idea why yours was not...and none of mine came with screen protector or any plastic covering. |
^^ sounds like yours was returned ^ when I bought my phone at wireless wave at metrotown, i asked the lady about any problems with the phone she has heard, then i explained the loose hinge issue. she opened the sealed phone package and let me inspect the phone before purchasing. saving me the hassle of going back and complaining if there was a problem with it. Btw my phone does kinda what the video shows. But honestly its not a problem. In everyday use most people do not encounter that issue. Mind you, I like that the phone does that, it means i can do one motion to pick up my phone and slide out the keyboard. The only thing that I would call a problem, is if you are lying down with your phone above you (keyboard out) and between 90degrees and 180degrees, your phone closes itself. Which mine does not. |

I guess some people don't hold it like I do. |
Thanks guys. After seeing so many suggestions, I went and check with BB CSR and showed them how lose mine is. They exchanged the phone on the spot for me and told me it shouldn't be that bad. Its a lot better now. It still not as tight as n97 and all, but i dont need to use my finger to hold it when its opened and lying down. When it's opened, i can hold my screen part with 2 fingers and the keyboard doesnt wobble and fall down anymore. I m happy. Since i got some BB credits, i bought the PEP for 2 years. I double checked to make sure the hinge is defintly covered under PEP. ;) looks like i will be getting a new phone when i got tire of this one. ;) Posted via RS Mobile |

is the Z new? I'm interested in picking one up.. but don't have enough $$ to throw around for a new one as a second phone. Best case senario trade plus cash for a BB Curve ;);) |
yah the Z is brand new, box was opened to retrieve the sim card from the box, and pretty much nothing else was really done, booted it on to see that it runs. I go through alot of phones and keep them mint since i dun really use them, not to interested in a trade right now for a curve cause im looking into a torch/9780 |
oh, one more thing. the other problem with ALL of my desire z's were that it had a wifi problem where if you hold it while using qwerty your wifi signal would decrease. For some it's not as bad maybe because they have stronger wifi signal. But for me my wifi, almost 80% of the time, the signal died down to almost nothing. This is because the antenna is located at the top of the phone. The hinge may be something you can blame on people being too picky but not this wifi issue. No matter how hard to tried to hold the phone differently when using the qwerty, I still had this problem. Just something to consider. |
The DesireZ features Sense2.0, better optimized for the 800mhz processor. The Desire/NexusOne is the same damn phone, but essentially has the most support in the community to date I would go with the Desire..or find a NexusOne |
Also note that sense 2.0 can be ported to the desire as well. |
