@Alphamale
The point you made makes complete sense and I agree with you, cloning a mammoth will attract much more attention from the media and in the public, which would turn would lead to an increase in grant money for the researchers to perfect the process with. Although the difficulty in perfecting the process between cloning a mammoth and an endangered species wouldn't be all that different, there are other factors to consider.
You see, with an intelligent comment you actually further the discussion.
@Spook.ek9
I agree, at the moment the highest priority in preserving endangered species is changing the attitudes towards them in certain regions of the world. As long as people value animals more dead than alive it will be impossible to save them, fortunately in some areas of the world those attitudes are changing.
@91LS-VTak
Guess what, I read the article and I realize they are trying to clone and endangered species. You fail at reading comprehension, because believing research efforts should be prioritized to address current problems before building Pleistocene Park is in no way suggesting the research should be banned.

And it'd be near impossible to get every country in the world to ban it. It's up to responsible scientists to actually do things that would benefit humanity

The cure for cancer is prevention.
It really isn't a great idea to compared other fields of science with this news story. You can't possibly expect every single scientist to be working on something of your interest, or all of them to find a cure for cancer.

I didn't mean to stop human from advancing and go back to the stone age. I'm going to be an engineer, and this kind of things would provide me with jobs.
Just that, after reading this article, I saw some connections to another article "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us" writtened by Bill Joy (a very well respected person IMO).
I made the wrong word choice. I should've used the word limit instead of ban. I just think that we should not rush into this kind of reasearches, and maybe there should be some limitations and boundaries.
sorry about all the confusion, the mammoth cloning is great because we could learn about the past. I just got a little sensitive when ppl on this forum started talking about cloning ppl and going beyond the scope of the article. |

You're talking about growing new hearts, livers, bone marrow and lots of other things that could save so many people. Maybe they can't cure cancer but if you get liver cancer and they can replace your liver a lot of people who may have died might now live.

This, like the Large Hadron Collider can only end badly. But it will no doubt be amusing as well.

Basically there is a big ass tube way under ground where they're hurling particles at each other trying to recreate the big bang (amongst other things).

Cloning a Mammoth is just plain stupid, IMO. What they learn will not apply to other areas of medicine (like cloning hearts or livers) since it's a completely different proceess.
Helping to stop the extinction of species? Give me a break. They can't even prevent current species from going extinct despite countelss zoos around the world with breeding programs to try and save them. Now we're going to bring back extinct species and believe we'll be able to introduce them into the world when we can't even do that now with still living species? Quote:
After the mammoth is born, we'll examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors.
| This is a quote from one of the scientists. Study its genes to see why it became extinct? I wonder if those very same genes can identify the hunters that exterminated countless mammoths. Or perhaps those genes will be able to give us a record of the weather patterns when the mammoth lived so we can understand what happened to them.
There is really only one area this research could be applied in regards to humanity: bringing back dead people by cloning them from preserved DNA. These scientists are performing research with some serious consequences. If they said "we're going to make a clone of Albert Einstein from some of his DNA" people would be outraged. By saying "we're going to clone an extinct species - specifically a mammoth" it makes it sound far more palatable to us. It's just a cute fuzzy mammoth. And we're doing good trying to bring back an extinct species.
Cut the fucking bullshit - their motives have nothing to do with extinct species.

^ i'm sure the motives are not completely transparent. But, it's still pretty bad ass. Quote:
