The scientists say they will extract DNA from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian laboratory and insert it into the egg cells of an African elephant in hopes of producing a mammoth embryo.
The team is being led by Akira Iritani, a professor emeritus at Kyoto University in Japan. He has built upon research from Teruhiko Wakayama of Kobe's Riken Center for Developmental Biology, who successfully cloned a mouse from cells that had been frozen for 16 years, to devise a technique to extract egg nuclei without damaging them, according to the Yomiuri report.
The U.S. researchers are in vitro fertilization experts. They, along with Kinki University professor Minoru Miyashita, will be responsible for implanting the mammoth embryo into an African elephant, the report said.
"If a cloned embryo can be created, we need to discuss, before transplanting it into the womb, how to breed [the mammoth] and whether to display it to the public," Iritani told Yomiuri. "After the mammoth is born, we'll examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors."

So, the solution to the rapidly approaching extinction of many currently living arctic animals, such as polar bears, is cloning an arctic animal that humans hunted to extinction 12,000 years ago...
Jurassic Park is my all time favourite movie and Snufalufagus is my favourite sesame street character, but there are higher priorities in the world... just my thoughts.

You think these scientists are better off spending their time trying to save an endangered species? Sure, their interests maybe part of that effort in their spare time but in the real scope of life, their interests and incentives lie in cloning a mammoth, for the purposes of exemplifying what can be done with cloning techonology and the branches of genetic and health advents it can create.
Do you think this will not eventually trickle down somewhere?
Your argument is about as good as telling NASA to stop sending shit into space because there's no war going on up there while human civilization is at stake via terrorist and civil strife.
If the scientists viewed that saving endangered species was more worth while, they'd surely divert their effort into that regards. Just like how you're on RS instead of in a soup kitchen.
