I would go with a Jaguar XJ (X350) and get a face lift kit (body kit) to make it look like a Jaguar XJ (X350) X358. All for under 20k if bought from the states.
I read these are the highest placed none Japanese cars for reliability, but I dont know for which years.
From the BMW mechanics who change them regularly? The same mechanics who all own a nice leatherette knee pad that used to be a seat cushion in a BMW? From those same mechanics who all own a pair of hog ring pliers (a tool that usually only upholsterers own).
What do you have against the e46? I personally love it way more than the e90 and its an absolutely classic design ... just make sure to get a 330 that's facelift (2002 and newer) with the mtech2 package/ZHP (Most underrated 3 series to date IMO) ...
Invest $2000 in some headers + a borla catback + install and you get this:
Picture yourself rolling off into the sunset in a brand new Daewoo Lanos. How do you feel?
Upset

Sorry I meant to say an e90 not a E92.
Here's my thing, I've had my E46 for awhile and I love it.
I had a dream I got new headlights on it last night (I guess that's what revscene will do to you).
The thing is that I just really want an upgrade and I LOVE the newer 3 series (2006 and on).
And I get bored of cars so easily- I just really really want to upgrade!!!

the 2006 525i, and 323i is the new n52 motor. Its much better on fuel enomony, but I dont know if i would trust it reliability wise. They have expensive electric waterpumps, and possibly electric power steering too. Not to mention there is lots of complaints of lifter noise and vanos failure.
The engine in the 2005 x3 and 2005 525i is the m54 engine, which could possibly be one of the best engines bmw made (other than the M engines ofcouse).
Just my suggestions coming from a BMW guy. To be honest, i feel like they are going down the drain in reliability.
Dont get a new BMW unless your going to lease it, abuse it, and return it.
