Can You Help Me Pick!?

Hi guys!!!!! :)

I'm selling my BMW in the spring and am going to be upgrading.

I kind of want to spend around the $20,000 mark give or take a few thousand and want to get another BMW(love them)

So I'm wondering what you guys think I should get?

For the year and price range I have seen a

2005 x3
2005 or 2006 525i
or a 2007 323i

I know a lot of you probably think the 323i sucks, because it has a small engine ETC but I don't really care about speed or anything like that.

I just want something reliable, good for the city, and comfortable.

I feel like the 5 series is kind of a contender, but I'm not 100 percent

What do you guys think?

Thanks guys!

Oh that picture makes it so horribly tempting to get a 3 series coupe. How much can I get one for?

CharlieH 01-24-2011 05:18 AM

^

that's a picture of an m3 coupe with exhaust, trunk, coilovers and expensive ass volk te37s. the mods alone would account for half of your $20,000 budget lol...

you can get an 07 328 coupe for around 22-25k though

but if you don't care too much about performance then i'd go for a 2005 530i. it has a lot more standard features than the 525 and is a way ahead of the 3 series in terms of comfort. they should be priced at around 25k as well.

just don't pick an x3. it's not a very good car.

I have an 07 e90 328i and so I will obviously recommend that. They should be going for under $20,000 if it's a private sale and around $25,000 if you are getting it pre-owned certified from BMW.

Also consider the 06 325i which is pretty much the same as the 07.

donjalapeno 01-24-2011 08:50 AM

525i, is your best bet. The X3 isnt a bad car, its basically a raised 3 series with extra room. Make sure you get a certified BMW car though or atleast pay some extra money and have a dealer mechanic take a look at it.

Go for a 328i sedan IMO, that chassis is a whole lot newer than the other two. Take the X3 for a test drive, the 2005 is one of the most uncomfortable rides out there, however unlike a toyota/honda it's not choppy and is actually really composed on rough surfaces, The 2007 and up I believe have better engines/ride.

The 323 doesn't suck, I've driven it with the automatic and it has plenty of power for daily driving, That said I think the 328 is a better deal if you're getting used because they'll probably be better equipped. I am in love with the chassis of this car though, keep in mind the rear wheel arch bulges into the seat quite a bit which makes the rear more suitable as a 4 seater.

If fuel economy matters to you definitely go for the newer line of engines, the one in our old x3 (3.0 si 260hp) sipped gas for a car of it's weight and power/drivetrain. However in the 323i I noticed an avg of about only 1-1.5L/100km less but it was a much lighter car and also 2wd. These are just my observations though. Another thing which is a nightmare about the 323i are the wheels. They are ugly and they are convex, they were impossible to keep clean (Quickly at least)

335is =]

n0ob 01-24-2011 11:47 AM

Sorry, I should also state:

GET THE SPORT PACKAGE. The car is NOT fun to drive without it.

damnnnn i didnt know the prices dropped that much:alone: i bought my coupe for 34k in the summer of 09.

Nicotine 01-24-2011 12:25 PM

5 series hands down.

maxx 01-24-2011 12:32 PM

depends on the mileage, if you are faced with a 5 with 60 or 70k and a 323 with 30-40k, i would purchase the 323.

i would not buy an 05 X3, for multiple reasons, unless you get a smoking deal on it, i.e $13-15000 with low kms.

323s are great cars, they are fairly quick with a manual and fun to drive. there are lots of them around. we had an 08 with 50ks for $21,000, sold it in about a day.

If like you said, you do not care about status or performance, I would haggle my ass off for the newest car possible with the lowest milage. Slap some nice 18 inch rims on it and call it a day.

p.s. and no, you cannot buy an 07 328 for 25k or a 530 for 25k.
p.p.s Ranger Rovers are dope!

rJZx 01-24-2011 12:41 PM

anything but the x3 :troll:

skyxx 01-24-2011 12:43 PM

I won't help you decide until you present a photo of yourself. :)

MindBomber 01-24-2011 12:45 PM

Yeah. Get a 335 if you want constant fuel pump issues.
