Looked into the speed 3 a while back. Had a craze for it too lol. Things you need to look at are:
1) Like Hatch or Sedan?
2) How are you going to mod or are you going to mod it?
3) Stock turbo or V6?
Things I liked:
1) Hatch
2) Flexible mod range
3) Compact
4) Red bucket seats
5) Simple yet modern dashboard
6) Stock turbo

2007's speed3's seem to be more problematic. Some have issues with smoking turbos. Rear transmission mount bolt could loosen and the motor falls a few inches, however most should have been fixed by the dealership. Some owners of 2008/2009 models report smoking turbos as well. Just google it up and check youtube for vids.
2008.5+ had the piano black interior, which can be a bitch to clean and scratches easily.

Sorry, I meant that I have very few. If I had to think of something I would say that I don't like that the auto climate control only works with the AC on.
Mileage is ok, considering it's AWD and turbo. I average 19-20mpg with near 100% city driving.
I've read about weak rear differential mounts, but mine has been fine so far. I might upgrade it in the spring since I'll probably want to bring the car out to mission once in a while.

The smoking turbo was a TSB and to be taken care of once it was proven by the dealership that it happens. Thats easier enough as you drive it there, shut it off, restart it and let it idle. Or just open your open up your intake near the MAF sensor and if there's black soot on the inside, its happened on that car.
Buuut that work will only be covered during warranty period of 80,000k or 4/5years - just like all of the TSB's.
TSB's are "less important" recalls that arent as dangerous (yay?). Find more info about them on here.
There was also a Clutch TSB for 2006 Speed6's. Mine is an 06 and the clutch is ridiculously stiff. A Mazda tech though it was a stage2 just to give an idea about the stock clutch for that year in case someones about to buy one.
Other than that, I do love my Speed6 and it feels like a "fun grown up" sedan.

I, myself, owns a mazda 3 and from my experience, it is one of the best cars you can get with 17k. Like honestly, nothing beats a car that sounds like a mazda rx8 for 1/2 of the price. Why not think of waiting and getting the new rx9. The mazda 6 is just soo wanna be luxury. Get a mercedes or bmw if you're aiming for that pleausre.

mazda3 sounds nothing like a rotary...
and there is no such thing as an RX9. mazda has suspended rotary engine production/development.

3 is great because you can lug more stuff around and is more convenient. but 6 with the awd is awesome and there is definitely room for a racecar grocery getter. torque steer is tough even on stock speed3's. plus, subie owners hate it when you point out that their hatch copied the design of the 3 |
