RS Runners Thread

After years of hating running and refusing to do it, it suddenly seems less of a chore and actually quite enjoyable. Starting to run a decent distance (for myself) of about minimal 5K to a max of 8.5K so far.

Just wondering if there are any other runners out on RS and if there is anyone with advice on how to improve runner's endurace!

Oh and maybe use this thread to talk about gear (shoes, watches etc) too!

Currently I'm using Nike+ free run, Nike+ watch, MP3 and UA cold gear leggings.

Wongtouski 01-30-2011 10:38 PM

I run quite a bit, started in gr 12 when I stopped swimming and gained a boat load of weight. I guess at that time, and today even, my way of improving endurance is simply to run on a consistent basis, and just challenging yourself every day. For me, I run on treadmills so I can literally see how fast I'm running. So say if I ran 30mins at 10.2 k/hr today, then maybe tmr I'll go 20mins @ 10.2 and 10 @ 10.4. I know its probably not the best way to do it but for me I just aim for consistency and longevity, so I strive for gradual improvements.

I run on nike lunar(something), Mizunos are good shoes, the guys that run runners' shops say the "legit" runners shun nike and go for mizunos and such (granted I was in a runners' shop in HK). I used to run in a pair of adidas, they were terrific cuz they were extremely light and durable. To be 100% honest I don't love my lunarwhatevers, but the look of it is so damn enticing!

I'm not much of a "regular runner" but I do like running and I can run decent distances.
I always run with friends if I can, it makes things more enjoyable and you don't focus on running. I usually just wear my UA heatgear and any shox cause I got two or three pairs.
^Yeah, challenge yourself everyday and run a little bit more or a little bit faster.

I've found the only comfortable nike shoes to run on are the air pegasus. Everything else always seemed to be a bit narrow. My favourite running shoes are probably saucany progrids, saucany omni, and asics kayanos...

I am starting to jog again after a knee injury... =) I've started jogging 20 or so minutes on the threadmill 2 times a week.. and will hitting the pavement soon... woot !

What sorta knee injury did you have? I twisted my right knee in basketball a while back.....took me a long time for it to recover......its still not 100%

RayBot 02-01-2011 09:27 PM

I'm currently training for the BMO Vancouver Marathon coming in May amongst other things.

I only started running last August, and i really don't know why i kept on doing it....just little at a time, finding new routes to make sure i don't get bored.

Also....view of a lot of hot girls in the process too.

I'm currently using the Nike Vomero 4, but thinking of getting rid of them and going to some Asics. Sure they were comfortable...but stability was....mediocre.

I'm running from River Rock Casino to Waterfront station on....thursday perhaps? Anyone wanna join?

RayBot 02-01-2011 09:27 PM

Oh....by the way, Nike+ GPS rocks!!

Derek_N84 02-01-2011 10:01 PM

^ +1 for NIKE+

Its the only reason I bought the shoes in the first place. I figured if I spent the money on the stuff I'd have no choice but to run lol.

River Rock to Waterfront ..? shiiiiiiit thats far lol

Oh and if anyone doesn't already use leggings for this weather, they're a god send if you hate running in sweats like I do. Felt funny and it was hard to get use to but now its runner-gasmic haha. (oh and I where them under my shorts, no moose knuckle peep show)

Leopold Stotch 02-02-2011 11:30 AM

i jst started running, i try and run to my old hs, once around and back, which is about 4k. i've been using BB gps programs to track it, but it's a bit bulky to carry, but nothing beats freeee!

i'm thinking about switching to interval training, which is my dillemma

gain endurance for hockey?

or

Lose weight for sexiness back?

i'd look into getting some new shoes - to each his own, but both of those are not regarded very highly in the running community.

the barefoot/minimalist movement is really pushing hard and lots of big name companies are putting their names in the hat (vibram five fingers, nike free, merrell trail glove, new balance minimus, saucony hattori to name a few). i've been running in VFFs for a few months now and am definitely liking it so far.

here is a great instructional video on how to run with "proper" form using the POSE method. also, check out the book entitled Born to Run.

You don't need Nike shoes for Nike+ though. There's ways of attaching the Nike+ sensor to other shoes.

played hockey with a guy who said thatw as a really good book,

how are your feet holding up? i hear it's hard to run in those at first because we're so used to soft cushioned shoes.

There was some dude beside me at the marathon running in bare feet. I really don't know what motivates you guys to do it.....but wow.

i'm still very much in the beginning stage, but the tops of my ankles are a bit sore (somewhat ironically) where shoes laces would be, but other that, i'm doing pretty well. barefooting is definitely NOT something that you can just take off your shoes and do. you have to do your homework with how to progress with patience and proper form.

a good wealth of barefooting info HERE

i started to offer my reasoning as to "why", but after about 20 minutes of fast and furious typing, i realized i was basically rewriting the book Born to Run, so just go read it for yourself :)

Harvey Specter 02-04-2011 01:07 AM

I have Nike lunars which I use to run on the treadmill. I've had the shoes for 2 years now, still like new and everyday for the last 7 months i've been doing 5k, 25 mins with 6 incline and the Nike's haven't let me down.

TheNewGirl 02-04-2011 05:28 AM

I haven't run for like... 10 years. I'm just getting back into it and I tell you it's killing me. But I tried out a pair of Five Fingers and was absolutely shocked by how comfortable they felt.

Sizzle which ones to you run in? I looked at two or three different pairs but wasn't sure what would be best.

i have the bikilas that i bought from citysports.com. they are marketed as the model meant for running, but lots of people prefer to run in other models for various reasons.

FYI: Fila is coming out with a copycat version of the five fingers called skeletoes which are going to be less expensive, but apparently they aren't marketed as running footwear.

RayBot 02-04-2011 09:26 AM

Great....now i am having a tendency to run.

Anyone for a run meet next week?

PS: Sizzle, maybe i will read. Where can i find that? running room?

illicitstylz 02-04-2011 11:04 AM

running places a lot of impact on your knees and feet, does forefeet running attempt to eliminate/alleviate that?

RRxtar 02-04-2011 01:17 PM

I started running a fair bit in the fall, usually about 5k at the track. It started to feel good after a while. I definitely want to get back into it in the spring. I actually really enjoy terrain running thru forested regional parks.

Need to get a new pair of shoes asap tho.

library, amazon, chapters. possibly at a running store, although it talks a lot of smack about traditional running shoes which would not be good for business if you're a running store owner.

YES! when you land on your heel with a longer stride, your leg is close to being straight which puts the impact on your knees, hips and lower back. landing on your fore/midfoot with a shorter stride uses your body's natural shock absorption to cushion the impact. studies have shown that there is less impact on joints from barefoot running than there is with the most highly cushioned running shoes - this won't apply to everyone though. it is highly dependant on how you run.

there is a mexican tribe called the raramuri (tarahumara) which translates to "the running people" who are known for running 50-100 miles at a time in huaraches seen HERE. Born to Run is based on the author's experience with the tarahumara.

I use nike frees 7.0

http://images.nike.com/is/image/emea...6046_100_A.png

not sure if they're the best for running but i like the flexibility and light weight of the shoe

Wongtouski 02-06-2011 06:22 PM

^ I really don't like the frees, Lunars are better.

I'm looking into these at the moment, anyone got intel?

Adidas Aegis 2.0

RayBot 02-07-2011 10:16 AM

Frees and Lunars are both completely different types of shoes of running. I can't run in either of them....Frees are so hard, the Lunars are comfy but they are gutless and not what i need for stability considering i am hovering around the 200lbs mark.

To the poster right above posting about the Adizeros.....they are excellent for track running, but really, i don't know how long they will last if u bring em to the streets or track. They are super light and airy though....i just use adizeros (not those exact ones) at the gym and nothing else.
