buying a car with money stilll owing. How do I know?

This may seem messed up and stupid on my part but I just have to know. I found a sweet deal on a newer car with a blown motor and a parts car with it. I'm about to drive to the next town to go and check them out and probably buy them tonight and get the towed home.

But I got to thinking, what if this guy still owes money on this car and is just trying to dump it? by the time I get home and are able to bring the transfer form and reg in to icbc he may be long gone and then I'm stuck with a car that I can't transfer.

Will a carfax show if it is free and clear to sell?
I'm assuming there won't be a lien as long as he is up to date on his payments so a lien check would be useless
Will an icbc/autoplan agent be able to tell me whether the (soon to be) PO still owes money on it?

So waiting one day for icbc to clear it is going to kill you? Thats how scammers work. Buy it now before someone else does!

its just that the deal was so hot and he has a few other people who want to come tomorrow I had to get on this boat, but he doesn't seem sketchy so a deposit will be the safest method

a lien has nothing to do with whether or not he has made payments.

if he borrowed money to buy the car, there will be a lien on it until it has been paid off 100%.

A carproof would tell you if there's an existing lien with name, address and the start date of the lien. As long as he hasn't pay the entire amount off, it'd still be there.

If there's a lien, go with him to whoever finance the car (bank, etc.) to confirm the amount. He can pay off the lien on the spot.

I hope you have some sort of recipe for the deposit.

CarProof.

$50 or whatever it costs can and will save you a bigger burden.

if it's purchased new in Canada then do an icbc lien check. That will be more accurate and quicker than if you did carfax or carproof

ICBC doesn't provide a lien check anymore unfortunately. Now its more difficult to find a company to do a lien check...

ok now that I have had a chance to deal with the guy personally I feel much better. I will run out there tomorrow and bring the papers in to an autoplan agent before going any further.

For those who care, its an 02 Corolla with blown engine, almost mint body. Complete with parts car with supposedly good engine (haven't heard it yet). Either way I got the works for $500. I can't go wrong
