Thank god for nandroid backups. Flashed checkrom 4.0 then realized all the shit I'd have to setup again so I reverted back to my last recovery

I've had nothing but good experiences with titanium backup. I guess if you have to restore everything from scratch it may not be worth it; especially considering ics is around the corner and you'll probably need to do it again when that comes out |

Physical buttons; I do miss having a home button as that's what I mainly used to turn the screen on but I can live with just using the side button. Cyanogen is great in that it's compiled off AOSP.. However having straight support from Google itself is pretty cool. The phone is large but not actually not much larger. The screen is actually more like 4.5" because the on screen buttons take up a portion of the screen. | Hmm, so I guess if you had the choice again, you would get the Nexus over the sgs2?
I'm just debating if I should do the same if the opportunity arises. Given everything I've read about how shitty Samsung's developer support is and how long we constantly have to wait for updates or flash custom roms, it just seems like going the Nexus route is a better choice if I stick with Android. Seeing how Samsung is treating the original SGS users doesn't exactly instill much confidence in the rest of us with sgs2s next year...

Well. They're only required to provide os updates for 18 months. So the sgs2 should see 1 more update.
If i had a choice I would probably go galaxy nexus. Just cause its the newest thing. Oems take a long time cause of their skinning and modifications to the os. Unfortunately they're all like that. Stock ICS vs stock gingerbread is like no comparison. Whearas gingerbread needs a few interface enhancements ICS has it mostly right.

However with most of us running custom roms, does it really matter if samsung keeps pushing out official updates or not?

I honestly have no idea why it did that. I'm starting to think maybe due to my undervolt on villain maybe the phone wasnt getting enough juice? I had occasional freezes on villain
Anyway, I ended up flashing cyanogen 7.2, but when I got titanium back there was nothing to restore! So I ended up having to reinstall everything, but it didnt take as long as I expected it to.
So far I'm liking it, it's clean, no touchwiz bullshit but it has all the little mods that I wanted built in.
I wonder if I'll be able to flash CM9 over this when its finalized

But with a huge upgrade like ICS where the kernel is upgraded from 2.6 to 3.0 and there are huge changes that affect everything across the board; then we need Samsung's roms. Apparently, Samsung messed up/changed a lot of things with their kernel and didn't follow the regular google/AOSP way. On top of that, Samsung kernels are closed source, so Cyanogen has to wait for Samsung to release their leaks so that they can take the kernel and make it compatible with AOSP source. The good news is that apparently a new leak is coming out for new year's and it has already been sent to Cyanogen...

I wonder if I'll be able to flash CM9 over this when its finalized | CM7 is nice, but don't you hate that the AOSP web browser does not feel like it's hardware accelerated and the pinch to zoom/panning is so unimpressively sluggish compared to the stock sgs2 roms? Same with the camera, it feels way less smooth when panning around. I went back to a Samsung base rom after because I couldn't stand it and I knew ics was coming out anyways. I think AOSP source just isn't as smooth for whatever reason. Same with cm9 and also the galaxy nexus when I played with it.
CM9 will likely flash over on top, but you'll probably have to wipe all your user data to prevent a bunch of FCs when you boot up.
Also, you might need to update your bootloader from gb to ics bootloaders and that is done through odin. Nobody really knows what the differences are for ICS bootloaders vs existing ones, but might as well do it properly.

I'm actually in the process of downloading checkrom again. Seeing as how yesterday didnt take me that long to get CM7.2 back to where I liked it, I figure I'll just download checkrom and install the ICS domination theme tonight
Should've just left checkrom on yesterday
But you're right, on CM7 I am noticing there are some hiccups here and there, maybe cause I'm on a nightly build.
BTW, how does kitchen pro work on checkrom? I fiddled with it a little yesterday, and I found that ICS theme so I hit "mark for installation" but nothing happened. Was there an extra step I missed?

Oh you just mark for installation, then press your menu button and choose Apply.
It should download the apk files then reboot your phone and flash the changes in recovery mode.
haha maybe you should just leave it and wait for the newest ics build coming from cm9 in the next few days. They already began updating with the new leak. Might as well see if it's more stable and maybe you can just flash the real thing |

Yeah I've been following this thread at xda: [ROM][IML74K][4.0.3] CyanogenMod 9 experimental Build [UNSTABLE][12-29-2011] - xda-developers
It's huge and there are a bunch of retards asking the same questions again and again and pissing the developers off, but there is useful info in there about the current state of the rom.

Holy shit thats a long thread, but from the original post it looks like they're still months away from having a stable release.
EDIT: Last few pages feel a little more re-assuring

From the kitchenapp?
Usually they're downloaded to the Download folder on your phone's memory. There should be an apk file in there.
Usually the updates should install on their own though after you press Apply.
