New rider + crash = amputee. please read! new rider + crash = amputee. please read!

I always look out for stories like this, not because I am sick and jaded but because it scares me straight into riding safely and taking precautions.

Take a look at this story:

- He was not wearing riding pants or boots
- He was hitting 90-100mph on the street, eventually crashing at 75mph
- He had poor shifting technique and/or the bike was too much for his skill level

Must be more in the 55 pages of the thread. :P

What else can you take away from this?

He's an idiot and hasn't learned anything.

This is why I always wear boots.

The lesson applies more or less to new riders and to people who have gotten themselves into lazy habits. There are a lot of riders like that out there.

- Ever had a friend/family member ask if they can ride your bike? Do you give them all your gear or just the helmet?

- How many new riders are more concerned about "what bike to get" rather than "what protection should I buy."

These tragic events are lessons for those types of people. Although I'm sure we've all contemplated wearing basketball shoes for a quick ride around the block.

I don't wear my seat belt for a quick ride around the block.
I don't pull 90 mph (150 kmph!) wheelies during a quick ride around the block.

i NEVER ride without my boots on. i can't understand why people buy 700 dollar jackets and then wear sneakers while they ride. i could have very well broken my foot last summer when some c lai decided to make a right turn from the middle lane on granville while i was next to her in the right lane. as a result, my left foot was squished between her bumper and the bike. the only reason i walked away with my foot swollen instead of broken was my sidi boots. 400 dollars doesn't seem so expensive anymore, does it?

Like someone said above, seems like the guy didn't learn anything.

If you respect your bike, learn the rules of the road and ride safe, you'll be fine for the most part.

Shit happens lol. I only hope that if anything happens to me one day I got my full gear on.

I wear everything from full leathers to spine protectors and boots on joyrides but i'm definitely guilty of skipping the boots and spine protector on commutes to work/school
