External Microphone?

Hello,

First off I'm not too sure if this is the correct place to ask but it's the closest I guess. If it's not may one of the admins or mods please move it to the correct forum. Thank you in advance!

Here goes...
I'm looking for an external microphone device to record the sounds of a cars motor. This is all being filmed with my GoPro Hero HD and it's great but all you hear is wind if you go over 80 KM/H and the car will be going up to speed of 120 for a very short period of time.
The GoPro works fairly well but it sounds much louder in person then on the footage.

I did a small search and I'm still researching but it doesn't look like GoPro has any external mic's that are available. Keep in mind I'm still searching so I could be wrong so this. It would have to be a separate device or somehow connects to the GoPro via USB but I could need a fairly long cable. I could use an extension if needed. I'm thinking of purchasing some type of microphone and sticking it either in, near or around the engine bay where I could get some deep growls from the exhaust and intake at higher RPM's.

Here is my question... what external mic should I be looking to get? It would have to be fairly small in order to place it within the engine bay.

Alright, so... Just to let you all know there is no external microphone available from the awesome folks at GoPro... yet? But! I found the best bang for buck external mic that can be used to record audio while capturing footage with the GoPro Hero HD.

It's called a Zoom H1. It's awesome. Comes with a 2GB SD card and battery so you're ready to record straight out of the box. I purchased one a while ago and I've been messing around with it. I'm in the middle of editing some crappy footage and audio recordings of my car and I'll post the results up very soon.

So for anyone who is interested in something similar look into the Zoom H1. I'd also recommend purchasing a K-Tek Windscreen for it as it helps with removing any unwanted wind noise.

Can't you buy an external 3.5mm mic like a Rode Videomic or VideoMic Pro and connect it to your Zoom. Just sync the audio in post and the quality will be much better then the mics on the Zoom.

I don't know. I purchased the Zoom and it works. I'll show you a clip soon.
The Zoom H1 quality is great along with the windscreen. You just sync up the audio in FCP with the GoPro footage. It's really easy.
