Fido to Virgin Mobile?

decided to post here since you guys are usually more helpful than those douchebags at RFD.

anyways..

so my credits for fido ended just recently and im also off contract.

i was on the $25 200M / 2500txt / U f2f / Call ID / VM

and i had a $10 credit for unlimited incoming calls

now im deciding whether to stay or go to another company. (i called the CSR to renew the credit but they said no but gave me i think 6 moths to decide on what to do)

now on to my needs

recently i dont call very much. but would like the security of having unlimited incoming instead of relying on evenings and weekends.

i mainly text. i dont need voice mail. but i need caller id. i would also 'like" but dont really need just enough data for like emergency browsing (will never youtube or twitter etc.)

Now on to the competition

mobilicity has the $25 plan thats perfect for my needs.. unlimited calling/texts and caller ID.. but im worred about reliability and the phones are incompatible with my gsm phone.

virgin mobile. also not sure about reliability. (is reception good at places like SFU/UBC) the good thing about virgin is my work has a employee plan where i can get 35% off any plan virgin offers.

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8510_innov8-2471.php i have this phone.. i think it might work with virgin because it has HSDPA 850 / 1900

virign has a plan

* 150 Anytime Minutes
* UNLIMITED Evenings & Weekends starting at 5pm
* UNLIMITED Local Incoming Calls
* UNLIMITED Text Messaging
* Call Display
for $35 - 35% off = $22.75

and a bunch of cheap data plans as well (after discount)

or.. i can call fido to try and price match for something cheap and similar.

thanks for reading

*takes "thanks" out of wallet and gets ready to give out*

Fido retentions

edit: oops, i missed the part where you said you already checked with rfd :)

I hear a lot of places refuse to match mobilcity or wind. Virgin... not sure. Good luck.

Gh0stRider 02-23-2011 03:57 PM

Ya, thats our Unlimited Incoming Plus plan. It just came out this month. The regular one doesn't have caller id included, so this one would be perfect for you.

If you want, PM me your IMEI and i can check to see if its compatible with the network, of course you would have to get the phone unlocked if it's not unlocked already.

Virgin mobile = Bell mobility

i checked with virgin and they said the phone wont work. thanks for responding.

any idea if the reception is good at sfu/ubc/forest (like coquitlam or north van)?

and any buggy texts that dont send?\

thanks again

Gh0stRider 02-23-2011 08:11 PM

Im not too sure on those areas, but virgin and bell share the same cell towers im told.

i would suggest looking for a phone that would work, because the lower end phones for virgin are kinda crappy.

i haven't had any customer complaints about text msg not going through.

Okami 02-23-2011 08:40 PM

i was just planning to get a blackberry. just hard to decide between the 9800 and the 9780.. thanks again :)

Virgin and Solo uses Bell towers.
Bell OWNS both.
Reception in SFU is ok. Decent until you go deep into a building made of concrete.
Basically the same as any other provider.
However, UBC is spotty. There are areas where other providers dont work and Bell towers will.
But there are also areas where it should work but it doesn't. Usually areas where you shouldn't be using a phone anyways. ;)

hi ghostrider. sorry to bother you again. do you know if virgin offers a 100mb data add on to voice plan. if i can get a cheap 100mb (all i need) and a blackberry on top of that $35 plan shown above ill be set :D

thanks for your time

Gh0stRider 02-24-2011 12:50 PM

theres a $40 plan that comes with 100mb but no unlimited calling. i'll check everything when i get to work.

Gh0stRider 02-24-2011 05:07 PM

You can do the unlimited incoming plan for $35 plus a blackberry bundle for $15. Blackberry social or blackberry email bundle

You can't add 100mb, minimum is 500mb

aww thats too bad. thanks for checking.

Okami 02-24-2011 09:13 PM

the 2 $40 plans are actually pretty good for my needs.

* 200 Daytime minutes
* UNLIMITED Evenings & Weekends starting at 6pm
* PLUS
* UNLIMITED Canada Wide Calling to 10 Numbers
* UNLIMITED text & pic Messaging
* 100 MB of Data

and i have to add $7 call display to make it $47.

i want a black berry bold. (not really cuz of the data i like the keyboard and the battery life.

can i get the bold with this plan.. (its a talk and text :/ )
but maybe the people at London Drugs might not notice and activate it anyways? :D

if that doesnt work how does the 1 month changing plan thing work.. like if i start out with a black berry plan.. and i switch to a talk and text after a month.. will there be some nasty penalty fee? (i plan to join the 3 year and just pay it off right away because with the supertab ill be retired and the phone wont be paid off)

thanks again for reading

Gh0stRider 02-24-2011 09:49 PM

Nope, wont work for blackberry. Its for certain android phones (galaxy 550, Legend)

go with the 9780.

9800 is just a touch screen that's not really all that. it's slower and it's doesn't do justice compared to iphone.

if u do email and bbm a lot, stick with the 9780, your battery will last longer

Okami 02-25-2011 10:49 AM

i think this might be a typo

BlackBerry Super Social 40 VM & CD

* 150 Anytime Minutes
* UNLIMITED Evenings & Weekends
* UNLIMITED Twitter & Facebook
* UNLIMITED IM
* UNLIMITED Text & Picture Messaging

Your selected plan feature: Voicemail 10 & Call Display

on the dedicated page to this deal it says choose only one

$26 for a bb plan with everything i need is just what i need. my friend said deals will be had in the summer so i can just switch later i guess.

and is it true if i have to wait a year before i can switch back to regular voice without incurring penaltys

i guess it depends where u got it. maybe special promotion?

6793026 03-01-2011 06:03 PM

to be honest, you'll soon give up on text, you'll start bbm-ing if u have data and your text will drop way down.
