Interior Designers

Hi guys,

My sister is looking for an interior designer. More specifically, she is looking for one who can also provide blueprints to the exterior of a house for work being done in Vancouver.

I don't know the in's and out's of interior/exterior design and blueprints and whatnot but please let me know if you can provide a referral. Thanks!

interior designers do just that, the interior of a house

what exactly does she want/mean by blue prints? that would be more of a task for an architect

Yeah I dont think she would need floor plans for designing an interior unless she's planning structural redesign

You can do a search on the AIBC website for firms that do interior design. They do have a search based on the city.

http://aibc.memberpro.net/main/body....s&page_id=3045

As for referals, I don't have any. The firm I work for is listed to do interior design but they do it more for existing clients, not as a primary source of work.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for confirming that.

I'll have to ask her what exactly her client is up to and what they actually want. On the other hand, I have a feeling her client is looking for an architect who can do interior design too. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades.

Well personally I'd go for someone who's major is interior design. IMO, the creativity will tailor more to her needs as opposed to someone who "does it all"

I actually had a thought that floor plans/blueprints of the INTERIOR do actually help with space planning. Its alot easier to tell where you'll have the extra space and where to place certain things in relation to where the natural light comes from etc.

The more info the designer has on existing conditions the better.

I think what she needs is a builder/developer, not an interior designer yet.

I should've read your post more carefully bcrdukes, but yeah it sounds like what they need is a home builder. They'd be able to get you in contact or have on staff someone that will draw up plans and they may be able to negotiate a better rate if the builder is going to do the work to.

If not, they can approach a designer, they can probably do the drawings if there aren't any major structural changes that need to be made. If there are, I'm sure they'd have contacts of structural engineers they've worked with.

I probably wouldn't call any developer, this wouldn't be their kind of work. Oh btw, blueprints aren't used anymore...it's much cheaper to get prints made and you won't have to deal with the ammonia smell.

Well, I spoke with my sister. Turns out her client bought some property in East Van and wants to tear the place down to build a duplex from scratch.

Well there's a few options (most expensive to the cheapest), hire an architect to design it, hire a designer, buy the floor plan online or order from the housing magazines or possibly the home builder would have plans already that they could look over and pick.

The other thing is, are they going to manage the project or they going to hire a general contractor.

if you're looking for an interior designer, talk to Yvonne at Home Delight, Richmond. They don't really advertise it openly..

Thanks, jACE!

Not sure what they're going to do so for now, I'm just going to slowly let this thread die.

Pretty sure a Interior Designer has the ability to do structural changes while a Interior decorator is purely aesthetic.
