| N Router Wireless speed
Here is the wired Internet speed of my Buffalo N router. I don't see any problem here.
When I use my iphone or other wireless device to connect to my Buffalo 300Mbps N router, I got 1/10 of the speed, then it becomes better with the latest firmware, but still only 1/5 of the actual speed (see below result)
iphone4
D/L 2MB/s near the router, 1MB/s in another room.
My gf's laptop with 801.11b wireless card (average signal, but it says connected at 11Mbps)
D/L 200kB/s U/L 140kB/s
Is the speed normal or something wrong with the router?

I am by no means an expert but I think you might have to log into your router and try changing the channels until one works (my wireless g router has 1 to 14, not sure about n).
Also since your gf's laptop has a 801.11b card make sure you also set the router to broadcast b as well as n (I am not even sure if your router has that option as b is pretty outdated already)
oh one more thing, if you change the channel to a 5 GHz frequency your gf's laptop shouldn't work as wireless b protocol only works with 2.4 GHz
let me know if any of that works lol. Good luck

I am using default setting, so it should support b mode. I thought 300Mbps router should get at least 100Mbps, not 20Mbps Posted via RS Mobile |

You should also know that you're testing internet speeds and just because you're connecting at 300Mbps, it doesn't mean your internet magically gets bumped to that speed. Your internet also has a max speed.
You're seeing expected behaviour.
PS: I wish we got residential internet speeds like that in Canada. Posted via RS Mobile |

I understand that a G mode device cannot get a N mode speed, the point is can it gets up to the maximum speed of that device and what is the actual maximum speed.
Yes, it is Internet speed, at this moment I cannot get the file transfer speed over the network. But I see people getting at least 80Mbps over a N router, so it makes me wonder am I doing things correctly. Posted via RS Mobile
EDIT: after some tweaking, it's getting better. It seems like 20Mbps is the max iphone4 can handle, I don't see any faster wifi speed on the Internet.

Try adjusting your algorithm settings. Set it to AES. It might be set on TKIP or TKIP+AES. Also, take a look at the surrounding access points and try to choose a channel that isn't used as much as the other APs around you.

remember as well - just because the wireless standard supports a theoretical speed of 54, 300, etc - doesn't mean that you will get that speed. You can find comparisons of a lot of routers on the market - and they will usually post speeds that are attained - and using internal transfers, so it's got nothing to do with the internet. That's why there are cheap $30 N Routers, and $150 N routers. Usually the more expensive ones will have a lot more features, be dual band, but generally - the higher end ones will have a longer range, and faster throughput.
