I know 4 very hardcore blackberry users.

1 has switched to android.
1 has switched to iphone because he's not got a gf who "made him".
The other 2 are just waiting out their contracts and will be jumping to android.

I don't think anybody outside of the business community is like "zomg. i want a blackberry" anymore. It just doesn't happen.
Despite blackberry falling about a year behind in the tech curve, the people at RIM aren't stupid. They are going to hedge their bets to stop the hemorrhaging. You can see the stats. Out of smartphone market share, RIM went from #1, to #2 behind the iphone, now that android has saturated the market, they have slipped to #3. And if it wasn't for companies that bought their employees blackberries, they wouldn't even be on the radar anymore.

They would be crazy not to have it routed through their servers. It's probably their ONLY way to control how the app is used.

I'm pretty sure that RIM is well aware of the rampant piracy that goes on with the iOS and Android platform application. Routing it through their servers would likely be their only way to keep tabs on how it's used. If they don't then they might as well just give out the full feature set of BBM and also their mainstream consumer (i.e. non business) customer base to their competitors since BBM is possibly the only reason mainstream users are using a Blackberry.

I'm not 100% sure but non-bb phones may not be able to communicate with the bis servers.

I'd actually consider parting with my blackberry if this came to fruition. I will say this though. I do enjoy having an actual keyboard as opposed to having to tap tap tap a screen.

^ Get a HTC Desire Z?

It has touchscreen and a keyboard.. best of both worlds?

Honestly, Android, iOS, and WM7 is the way to go, and this is coming from a Blackberry user.

The keyboard on the Desire Z is nowhere near as good as BB keyboard. Feels ... very awkward.

Also, on Android, depends on the onscreen keyboard you use that will totally effect your outlook on typing on a touchscreen.

For all you Android users out there, Smart Keyboard Pro is the most accurate keyboard I have used!!

Maybe I'm missing something here, especially since I've never been a Blackberry user, but what's the difference between BBM and another phone using text messaging? Simply the theoretical need to not have a text plan?

able to see if your message was successfully delivered
able to see if your message was read
ENCRYPTED (why you think all the gangstas use it? HAH)
international.

i dont get why ppl are so into bbm if all their bbm contacts live in the same area. or even country. dont most plans have country wide texting now?

I use bbm cuz half my contacts are in asia and europe.

i can talk bad shit with the people in china without worrying about the govt looking at what we're talking about, whether it be slandering the govt, hookers or blow. or whatever.

i can see if someone reads my msg and doesnt reply, and then i know they're a fucking douche. and they know that i know they're a fucking douche. hah.

thats the difference. oh i guess there's group chats if you're into that stuff.

It has a different icon for delivered and read. I believe it's a check with a D for delivered and a check and an R if it's read.

the majority of "gangster" who use BBM dont even realize the major factor of BBM is encryption lol

BBM is overrated and used by dumb broads who dont want to give their number out to people but dont mind adding another contact to their list

if BBM costs more for my plan on my iphone, or the app is like a $20 app, i wont be getting it.

now way lol..
so much more grip and less typos on the desire z imo.
if youre a blackberry user you wont be used to the desire's keyboard because its almost twice as wide..

i can type faster using swipe with one finger on android than a bb user
im cereal.

Exactly.

Lols, tap tap tap on a touch screen is for iphone users.

Android users just swype fingers across the screen for texting magic.
You don't even have to be accurate. It's pretty much like touch typing for me now, except it's just fingers patterns.

So. Fast.

Single checkmark means the message is sent to the server, double checkmark means the message is delivered to the user (The user may have or may not have read it).

WhatsApp does not have the capability to determine if the message has been read by the user, BBM can.

Also,

WhatsApp currently has a 5 user group chat limit which is lacking compared to BBM chat group (which is 30).

BBM group chat allows you to share pictures, calendar and notes with fellow members. Not sure if WhatsApp has that capability yet.

At the moment, BBM is far superior than WhatsApp, but lacks the multi-platform capability.

^

It's actually:
Checkmark = message sent to server
D = message sent
R = message read
