what if RIM gives the APP free but you have to pay to get a BBM Pin/number... that you can fake coz it needs to be registered on RIMs server...

Meowjin 03-07-2011 12:36 AM

BBM is awesome. It's the only reason I have a blackberry.

If RIM is going to focus on mobile tech, then they need to do more than just license BBM; they need to license the whole Blackberry Internet Service so that the rest of the world can get e-mails in real time.

It seems like e-mail is an anachronism to many here, but some of us older folks still use it.

^ I thought all phones nowadays can get e-mails in real time... at least on my Android phone I have hotmail + gmail + company mail configured to push.

It's actually:
Checkmark = message sent to server
D = message sent
R = message read

There's no "D" and "R" for WhatsApp, only for BBM.

BIS delivers e-mails instantaneously to your blackberry the moment there's a new e-mail in your inbox, so it's real-time. Push notification checks your e-mail box at a predetermined time. For ex, every 5 or 10 min, however way you set it on your phone.

So no, push is not real-time.

Kik messenger does S (checkmark), D and R. Thats probably why they are getting sued by RIM. Check it out...

http://www.kik.com/

BIS is "push", it is instant delivery to your inbox. The alternative is "fetch", it will check on demand or at preset intervals (5, 15, 30, 60 mins).

Push mail is available on the iPhone using MS Exchange ActiveSync. When a message is sent to your email address it will appear in your iphone inbox and you will be notified immediately. To do so you must be using a MS Exchange email account (server 2003 or newer) or a Gmail account. Gmail can be setup using ActiveSync (do not setup your gmail account using the Gmail button on the iphone) and supports realtime/instant/"push" for email, calendar and contact syncing. Check it out...

Thanks, got the 2 mixed up. :)

Yeah I heard about Kik being sued, thats why they couldn't implement the "R" and "D" into WhatsApp.

skholla 03-07-2011 04:07 PM

No worries. A new version of Kik was released today and it's pretty cool. The added group chat and picture attachments, also enhanced address book integration. Still can't send vid or choose pics from camera roll :( Also small things are missing like URL auto detection within chats.

^ What's the maximum number of users you can collaborate with kik's group chat?

skholla 03-07-2011 05:52 PM

WhatsApp does not have the capability to determine if the message has been read by the user, BBM can.

Also,

WhatsApp currently has a 5 user group chat limit which is lacking compared to BBM chat group (which is 30).

BBM group chat allows you to share pictures, calendar and notes with fellow members. Not sure if WhatsApp has that capability yet.

At the moment, BBM is far superior than WhatsApp, but lacks the multi-platform capability.

thx
and yes whatsapp can do the picture, voice notes, locations and videos sharing
