RIM to bring BBM to iOS and Andriod.

Amazing news for folks with BlackBerry-obsessed friends: Research In Motion, the company behind those addicting devices, might be bringing its popular BlackBerry Messenger app over to Apple iOS and Android devices.

BGR reports that "multiple trusted sources" have shared details about RIM's plans to bring the "BBM experience" to third-party platforms:

As far as what Android and iOS users can look forward to, we’ve been told RIM will offer stripped down versions of the BBM experience BlackBerry owners know and love. That way, Android and iOS users can communicate with practically anyone who has a smartphone using BBM, but they might not be able to share photos, location, or videos (when RIM crosses that bridge). Users who want the full BlackBerry Messenger experience will still need a BlackBerry smartphone to get it.

For those unfamiliar with the reasons for BBM's cult-like following, it boils down to this: It's a solid Instant Messenger app which allows for the sending and receiving of messages of unlimited length, real-time confirmations that messages have been received and read, the ability to share media with multiple contacts at the same time, barcodes which can be scanned to add contact information, and more.

We can only imagine that there would be quite a few more folks who'd join the BBM cult if the currently BlackBerry-only app made its way to iOS and Android devices, but we'll see what happens.

Lol I have a feeling that a ton of people will switch to iphone/android because they are no longer going to be attached to their BBM on their BB devices.

Isn't this kinda the position IBM was in?

Market leader and a choke hold on the business end.
But they got out of that game and they are doing plenty well focusing on server tech and other R&D.

If RIM has figured out that they can't play the game with all the cheaper androids out there, then they could conceivably evolve their market into phone tech and business uses rather than trying to build a good piece of hardware.

+1

Only reason I can't ditch the berry cause of BBM. If this goes through.. See ya Blackberry!

I just can't see this happening.

MTV Cribs 03-03-2011 05:23 PM

I hope this happens soon. I hate carrying both an iPhone and blackberry around.

the article mentioned it'll be stripped down version, so I would say don't be so excited as it could be only single messages no pictures no videos no chats.... which sucks

A-Dev 03-03-2011 05:40 PM

easily do-able.

I believe RIM should jump on this right away. It could be a massive cash cow for them.

Take every IOS and android platform out there and times that by a BBM app which should sell in or around $49.99. (at that price it should be a complete BBM experience, I do admit)

For 50 dollars there aren't many people that would pass on that due to their BBM addiction.

the only reason i really miss bbm was it was soo easy to pick up girls with it, i know more girls at clubs, school and work that uses bb than any other smartphones

Seriously....?

I dont get how you guys can "pick up" girls on bbm, its still so impersonal..

Anyway the only reason I'd miss bbm is because literally all of my friends have a berry. If I could get on an iphone with bbm, :fuckyea:

willystyle 03-03-2011 06:03 PM

This would be a smart move for BBM, considering that they are not in the position to effectively compete with iOS and Android at the moment. Also with the emergence of WM7 + Nokia, it makes sense that RIM should consider evolving to the software R&D side and slowly move away from the hardware side.

cliffhanger33 03-03-2011 08:19 PM

thats pretty sick, always wanted bbm on my iphone =), now iphone will be pretty decked out lOL , i doubt it will go down tho

Durrann 03-03-2011 08:33 PM

With the arrival of Nokias "QT" it opened up the ball game for cross platform apps/features without having to totally recode apps etc (already works with symbian/meego/webOS/Android)

so its no surprise that we'll be seeing a move in that direction down the road from everybody

Not entirely true. People still love the physical keyboard.

Razor Ramon HG 03-03-2011 09:18 PM

It's a great idea until you think about battery life on the iPhone, and the loss of a physical keyboard.

Fact is everyone knows there's ways to get free apps in both iOS and android thus rim will not make a penny. Why would they do this?

A-Dev 03-03-2011 10:42 PM

^^

Very true. but would you be able too. each purchased application would have to have an accompanying BBM PIN that is registered on RIM's servers.

That probably won't be an option as the data won't end up being transferred through RIM's servers like it does on a BB. It'll be over and through your provider.

i couldnt even get an entire day from one charge on my iphone. because of the sync in my truck, i like to leave my bluetooth on all the time and on the iphone it keeps constantly searching when its not connected, so its a HUGE drain on the battery. the blackberry on the other hand isnt always searching and i get 2 days of usage from one battery charge.

baggdis300 03-03-2011 11:41 PM

i was able to get 1 day with music/data usage...

any more then that was when i barely used it it would last 2 days max

battery life improved as i updated the OS

Gh0stRider 03-04-2011 12:22 AM

hope this happens. i wanna throw my bb out the window
